Forums - Microsoft - Brand Loyalty Established?

No, you can't build a rocket ship but you can install linux. It is even easier than installing windows nowadays. Just pop the dvd in and there you go.

That is very loyal, to microsoft. I am sticking with them. ;) Brand loyalty is not getting every new application/device. It is about not getting alternatives.

I do use Linux, but most people can't because their applications won't run on Linux or their computer at Best Buy didn't come with Linux installed.

The people who use Windows do so because they generally have to, not out of any respect of the Microsoft brand. You'd think the Zune would have caught on by now.

People are loyal to games. A new Halo (for the Xbox3) will move lots of systems. Same for a Gears of War or a Forza. (Believe it or not, lots of my friends bought a Xbox360 for Forza).

People know they will have a Halo, Forza, Fable and most likely Gears just on the Xbox720. So they might chose this systems right away. So games are the reason, not the Xbox logo or the MS name on it.

Same with Playstation and God of War, Gran Turismo etc.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

As far as I know, there are a lot of stores which offer preinstalled linux. Those computers don't sell as much as the ones which come with preinstalled windows. Why is that?

Yes, I think most people would still get windows. But you should not forget, MS office is part of the brand loyalty. People aren't getting the free open office, they get the ms office.

Because people buying the computers - and knowing nothing about OSs - are told by their slightly more tech-savy nephews/sons or by the shop clerks that they need the Windows one to run their programs or their games.

As to MS office, that's not brand loyalty. That's lock-in to proprietary files format, need to retrain staff in enterprises to move to different software, etc. With your logic you would say that people are not loyal to the MS Windows brand, but to the Windows XP brand, and not to the MS Office brand, but to the Office 2003 brand :)

The offering is still too different for a user that has never installed himself an office suit, let alone an OS.

Anyway, I think we're OT :)

You do know that there are alternatives for those applications on linux? Zune has nothing to do with Windows brand.

You cant underestimate the loyalty that LIVE and associated Achievement points will have provided.

Presumably the accumulated Achievements will move onto the next platform... that alone will drag a lot of users along to the next MS console.

I can assure you that not many would be "dragged" if the next-box costs $600 at launch. Some thing trump whatever brand recognition exist. Brandname is only responsible for 20% of customers in a best case scenario especially in our industry. Most people still evaluate everything thats out there each and every time. It would be the actual games who sales are more dependent on "name" than the consoles themselves. However, even in the case of the actual games, fans would still cease to purchase the latest title if it sucks in their opinion.

Yes, I know that. I use Linux. There are proprietary applications for Windows that people have to use for work and school, and often there are no ways to work around it (even with wine). Most people don't want the hastle of figuring out how to work around it.

Sony didn't have achievments and gamer score in PS2. If Xbox 720 shares those features with 360 then a lot of current gamers will stay with MS.

Well I know that I wanted to get my 360 back when it bricked(No PS3 existed on my House back then)... Still I'm feeling iffy about buying another console from them on the next gen.

I go where Halo 4 goes or Bungie goes. If Bungie makes a PS3 exclusive, I will buy a PS3. They have earned my respect for their impeccable ability for toned gameplay.

Like he said.

Although i already have a PS3.  But I spend way more time on 360.  Next gen - I go where Halo and Bungie go.

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

PS3 proves theres some brand loyalty, but only about 10%. The other 90% is price.

If brand loyalty was a major factor, Wii would be last like the gamecube and PS3 would be first by a mile.

People will always buy what's cheapest. Throw out a $199 Xbox 720 and it will sell like mad.

I agree with this.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
