As far as I know, there are a lot of stores which offer preinstalled linux. Those computers don't sell as much as the ones which come with preinstalled windows. Why is that? Yes, I think most people would still get windows. But you should not forget, MS office is part of the brand loyalty. People aren't getting the free open office, they get the ms office. |
Because people buying the computers - and knowing nothing about OSs - are told by their slightly more tech-savy nephews/sons or by the shop clerks that they need the Windows one to run their programs or their games.
As to MS office, that's not brand loyalty. That's lock-in to proprietary files format, need to retrain staff in enterprises to move to different software, etc. With your logic you would say that people are not loyal to the MS Windows brand, but to the Windows XP brand, and not to the MS Office brand, but to the Office 2003 brand :)
The offering is still too different for a user that has never installed himself an office suit, let alone an OS.
Anyway, I think we're OT :)
