If you're going to measure something, you have to set criteria. So what makes something more popular than something else?

But we are talking overall popularity, not sales.

Well then, if we are to distinguish between the two, define popularity, show me how it is at all provable, and how one could seperate themself from the bias of their environment (e.g. if you live in North America, own only a 360 and Halo is a common talking point among friends).

Anyhow, the best measure of popularity for a product is sales and/or demand. Would you disagree?

Who sets the criteria? It has been stated many times in this very thread, first of we are talking this gen, not last, so sales numbers are irrelevant at this point, and second, if it were only sales, then I guess many Wii games are more popular than either. However you don't see all the hype or following for any of the GT series or Wii games that Halo 3 received.

Dude you are as hopeless as they get.  The thread title is clearly asking which is the more popular..."SERIES".  Series.   Gran Turismo 1, 2, 3,4 Prologue, 4, 5 Prologue, 5....Halo 1,2,3,ODST.

2. a number of games, contests, or sporting events, with the same participants, considered as a unit: The two baseball clubs played a five-game series.
3. a set, as of coins or stamps.
4. a set of successive volumes or issues of a periodical published in like form with similarity of subject or purpose.

The OP using the word "Series"  completely means that he is referring to not just this 'gen' but every pre-existing generation in which there was a series of this sort.   When talking about the series and it's overall popularity you are talking definitely about the entire set of games popularity on a World-Wide basis.

You're wrong, narrow-minded and completely oblivious to the facts no matter how many times it's been thrown in your face.

You need to throw in Halo Wars.

actually i mean is thats why i said is, not was.  I meant is GT in general more popular then Halo in general

By saying that i am not talking about last gens cause that is the past and is was (if that makes any sense lol)

Mabye i should have said is GT5 more popular then Halo 3 but considering all the halo games and GT games that have/are coming out this gen i put down series cause that was actually more correct.

You missed one VERY important word in the thread title, "IS". This word is present tense and obviously means the creater of this thread meant this gen, infact he has even stated so. Also, the fact that series is plurel only points to the fact that we are talking about two different series, not a full series. His symantecs were a little off I agree, but when yo_john117 himself stated that he was talking this gen I would have thought somebody with your massive intelect would have been able to figure it out...guess I was wrong.

Edit: O.T...Rpruett, your little cherry picking of my accidental ommission of an "e" in the word "associates" is just sad. And in reply to your silly "want to own me more?" question, yes, and I could easily do it, but this is not the place to, send me a P.M. if you wish to continue and we can do it where it won't destroy people's threads. Sound good?

Are you serious? You do! If you are to make a claim, you have to have reasons why you have done so. My criteria: sales, hence why I say it's unfair to make a comparison. All we have is a demo... and that has sold 1/3 of what Halo 3 has sold. If you are to claim that one series is more popular than the other, you have to do it based on criteria. You choose the criteria. Now, you may be biased in doing so, but you have to base it on something.

Secondly, I understand that we are talking this gen. I'll restate what I had said in an earlier post:

"I think any comparison as of now, until GT5 is released, is highly speculative."

Hype does not equate to popularity. The book 'Twilight' is getting an insane amount of hype lately, does that mean it is as popular as 'Romeo and Juliet' (which is owned by just about every school kid in the western world)? Just because a fanbase is more cult-like, doesn't make it more popular either. People study and adore the movie 'Casablanca', but does that necessarily mean it was more popular than 'The Titanic'? Certainly not. Just because an existing fanbase is more rabid (or active, if you will) does not mean it is more popular... You may be able to argue that it is more revered.

And yes, I would say that several Wii games are more popular than either Halo or GT: Wii Sports and Wii Fit namely.

So, what criteria are you basing this popularity on?

Personally, I think a comparison of current generation games only is unfair and would only be speculative anyway. A Gran Turismo has yet to release.

See the fact that GT5 is not out means you cannot compare sales, so why are you trying? This thread was more than likely made just to see who THOUGHT that GT is more popular, without sales numbers your argument is nothing. But lets face it, there was a bigger following, and more excitement for Halo3 than there is for GT5. And I guarantee you few (if any) people will actually stand in lines outside of stores just to get a copy of the game, and I doubt any will take time off work to play it. So yes, just in leading up to the first day of sales Halo3 blows GT5 out of the water.

I said, and this will be the third time now: "I think any comparison as of now, until GT5 is released, is highly speculative." Any comparison between the two is ridiculous now. I seem to be the only one not actually taking a definite stance on this.

Your second point is irrelevant. Hype does not equal popularity. They are very much different things. Just because an already existing fanbase (and a smaller one, too) is more excited about a release, does not make it more popular. I will reiterate:

Hype does not equate to popularity. The book 'Twilight' is getting an insane amount of hype lately, does that mean it is as popular as 'Romeo and Juliet' (which is owned by just about every school kid in the western world)? So, what criteria are you basing this popularity on? Keep in mind, this is a question of popularity, not hype. I mean if we are to base this on hype, we could probably say Killzone is more popular than GT.

Funny, the thread title is "Who actually believes that GT series IS more popular than Halo series." Gathering from that, I believe it is safe to say this thread was created more on the speculative side of the issue. Past sales have nothing to do with the speculative popularity of Halo3 and GT5. And yes, fan base (which is substantially larger for Halo3 than GT5 as I have proven time and time again) is a huge measuring factor in popularity. For your viewing pleasure I have included the Websters dictionary definition of the word "popularity"

Definition: Popular
Popular

Adjective

1. Regarded with great favor, approval, or affection especially by the general public; "a popular tourist attraction"; "a popular girl"; "cabbage patch dolls are no longer popular".
2. Carried on by or for the people (or citizens) at large; "the popular vote"; "popular representation"; "institutions of popular government".
3. Representing or appealing to or adapted for the benefit of the people at large; "democratic art forms"; "a democratic or popular movement"; "popular thought"; "popular science"; "popular fiction".
4. Comprehensible to the general public; "written for the popular press in plain nontechnical language".
5. (of music or art) new and of general appeal (especially among young people).

That's what I've been saying! Mostly everyone else has been acting otherwise.

Past sales have nothing to do with the speculative popularity of Halo3 and GT5.

I would agree with you for the most part here, but there are some undeniable things to take away from past sales numbers. GT has a huge fanbase. And GT5:P has sold more than double of what GT4:P had sold.

And yes, fan base (which is substantially larger for Halo3 than GT5 as I have proven time and time again) is a huge measuring factor in popularity.

You haven't proved that the fanbase is bigger for Halo at all from what I've read (to be fair, I've only read from page 6 on). In fact, I don't know how you can prove this without using sales.

No need for pretentiousness, my friend. If we're to talk about popularity, I'll assume none of us are so dense as to not know what popularity means. I simply asked you on which criteria do you measure popularity for a product, throwing out someone else's definition doesn't answer the question. There are several types of popularity: social, general and mainstream (As far as I know, there may be more?). I would assume we're talking mainstream popularity, which would take into account the quality of being common, well-received, and in demand. To prove anything, first we'd have to find a way to measure these criteria.

The quality of being common. That's a really difficult one to do, it's the one you seem to stress a lot. As difficult as that is to measure, it's made even more difficult to do coming from a perspective of living in a country where 72% of one fanbase is as opposed to 29% of another (based off Halo 3 and GT4 respecitvely). Sure Halo is getting a movie, but so has Bloodrayne. Secondly, it's not surprising that a game that is so disproportionately popular in America is getting a movie. It is, afterall, where most movies are made. *Kind of funny to think of a movie they could base on a simulation game like GT though*

Well recieved. Again, difficult to tell as GT5 hasn't come out yet. Basing this off user reviews from their PS2/XBox iterations, they are near the same, with GT3 being a bit higher than GT4, Halo 1, 2 and 3. Not a great comparison, I know, but I'm not sure how else to compare this.

In demand. Once again, it's only silly to compare until GT5 comes out. The only measure I can think of is of growth rates. GT5:P has sold more than double what GT4:P had sold. GT4 and Halo 3 sold about the same amount worldwide. Can we assume GT5 will grow similar to what GT5:P has sold? No... and I sincerely doubt that it will. The userbase of PS3, I think, is dramatically different than it was with PS2. So, who knows, I could be wrong, but to state that "It has already been proven the Halo series is more popular than the GT series" is incredibly presumptuous.

Hell, I don't even know why I'm arguing anymore. I could care less about either series.

You forget that GT2 was heavily bundled, a brilliant move on the GT franchises part, it's kinda like what coke did in WW1. they gave coke to all the troups for free, and when the troops came home, they all enoyed the taste and bought it, that rocketed coke sales and put them on the top. So using that knowledge it is fair to assume that GT3 sold well because of the heavy bundling of GT2.

I also would like to point out a key word in the thread title yet again "Believes" so this is more speculative. So far the fan base is highly skewed towards Halo3, the purchase base is highly skewed towards the GT series. I own several games I enjoy, that doesn't mean I am a fan of them, In retrospec I probably wouldn't have purchased them because to me they ust weren't worth the money.

The reason you are arguing is simply for the debate. thats why I am doing it, and I like to see fanboys squirm! In reality, I could care less which series is more popular, I enjoy the Halo series, and have never played GT (probably won't because I SUCK at racing games) but I beleive both games cater to a different audience. Clear enough fer ya?
