Forums - Sony - How much is Sony costing this industry? (Developers and Video sotres alike)

What would the gaming market look like without Sony? Sony pushes the bar forward in gaming. If the only choices were the wii or xbox 360, I would be very disappointed. Yes, they are cheaper choice but they don’t push anything. They keep the gaming market stagnate.

Are you serious? I hoping I am missing the sarcasm in that statement. In order to push gaming forward you would have to innovate no? Sony siphons its idea from its competitors. They consistently denigrate their competitors for thinking of something. Then pilfer the idea for themselves, that is not pushing gaming foward. They have been doing since they entered gaming as with the PS1. Whether it be rumble and analog from Nintendo, Hard Drive from MS, "free" on-line from Sega, Downloadble content from MS, the list goes on. They were the first to put a DVD drive in a console and thats pretty much it.

Gran Turismo, I'd refute you post but it has been done several times over.

I was talking just about technoligies actually in the machines. Each company pushes the industry in different ways:
Nintendo:They made Motion Control as standed.
Sony:They pushed graphics this gen.
MS:Brought online play on to consoles as a standed last gen and it took effect this gen.
Eh.  You said that Sony made much larger leaps this gen then Nintendo or MS.  Even if we're just talking technological horsepower here, I'm not convinced the PS3 is significantly more powerful than the 360 in terms of its actual rather than theoretical capabilities.  And before anyone cites Killzone 2, I really don't get the graphical hype about that title.  Maybe it's just because I think the art direction (which is different than the technical strength of the graphics) is boring as toast after my eyes have seen the stylized worlds of BioShock and to a lesser degree Metroid Prime 3.

@choir:
Jeez i have to spell it out for you.I mean from PS2 to PS3,GC to Wii and Xbox to X360 i dont mean cross systems i mean from their previous system.

They also had some innovative business practices back in the day.

But doesn't that story sound remarkably like the origin of Windows?  :)

I just fail to see what's significant in terms of the going from a system slightly less powerful than the XBOX to a system slightly more powerful than the 360...  All that proves is the PS2 had a two year longer life span than the XBox.

The gaming industry was about to die before Sony came along. Sony is by far the best thing to happen to the industry.

all Sony did was jump on the bandwagon after the most even handed generation ever with a questionable business practice, the loss leading strategy, sony introduced the idea. man how things could have been different if atari had gotten an injunction to prevent the sales of the ps1 at a loss as it is a very monopolistic tactic, (Sam Tremeil actually said he was going to but given Jack Temeil's policy on atari's purse strings I'm sure he stopped it, wouldn't have benefitted atari anyway)

I know everybody that is old enough to remember 1995 ripped this statement apart but it is easily the most idiotic statement I've ever heard

I HAVE A DOUBLE DRAGON CAB IN MY KITCHEN!!!!!!

NOW A PUNISHER CAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow what a dumb thread.

Good trolling though.

The question could be generalized to include the PSP and XBox 360 by asking "How much has the transition from a graphics dominated industry to a gameplay dominated industry cost developers and stores?" which is not an easy question to answer.

The reality is that most retailers supported all systems so their unexpected losses from the PS3, PSP and XBox 360 have been balanced against unexpected gains from the Wii and Nintendo DS. Developers (on the other hand) tended to favour the PS3, PSP and XBox 360 over the Wii and Nintendo DS which has resulted in a shift of money towards the developers who gave reasonable support on the Wii and DS; being that Nintendo was the primary supporter of their systems they have benefitted the most but some developers who provided decent support have also gained from their backing of the Wii/DS.

You're at it again? God damn it Hus. If you find these threads boring and useless then don't read them. Can't you take a hint?
