Forums - Gaming - Look out BluRay + HD-DVD... here comes HD-VMD!

I'll gladly invest in Blu-Ray, also hunter_alien, Microsoft doesn't really have anything invested in HD-DVD outside of their external drive for the 360, and they're already quite content with HD-DVD never becomming the standard. And Sony is but one of nine companies invested in Blu-Ray so they'll do their part to stop it but quite honestly just don't have the financial resources to wage an all out war against a new format.

Both Sony and MS will do whatever they need to stop this taking over , and I mean there will be huge ammount of money payed for exclusive rights :) I still bet on the BD to win the war ;)

Microsoft hasn't made much of an investment in the format war, its not like there is an HD DVD drive IN the 360.  The only reason they care is that Blu-Ray loosing would be a MASSIVE blow to the PS3.  So if Microsoft anticipated this format beating Blu Ray, they'd do whatever they reasonable could to help it along

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Too late HDVMD too late. This new format is just going to add confusion to the consumers and Sony(and the rest of BA)and Toshiba will not let this new format come out and steal sales and suddenly take off and kill BD and HDDVD.

End of 2014 Hardware Predictions (03/03/14)

PlayStation 4: 12-15million

Xbox One: 7-10 million

Wii U: 8-9 million (Changed 01/04/2014 from 7-9 --> 8-9 million)

In an already crowded market, I welcome another contestant that wants to become the next Laserdisc (ie. another tech that isn't enough of a leap over its predecessor to lure customers en masse to the format).

This is starting to remind me of the ape scene in 2001... Just replace the monolith with a giant DVD and put Toshiba, Microsoft, and Sony shirts on all the apes. It makes for a great visual.

I highly doubt that list of movies is actually valid. Do you actually think movie studios (after time, money invest in) would do this? Million standalones sold on both sides, this format will get support. Not disney, or sony for sure after all the resources they have invested in blu-ray. It will be like the year headstart microsoft got (already has great games to offer - movies in this case) sony was having trouble early this year, but since the brand still had something to offer. Here people will be like what there already br, and hd. Ill be suprised to see them actually get shelf space at the major electronics companies since they are extremely tight as it is.

Am I the only one who noticed that this just DVD with many more layers? This, in my opinion, proves why BD is better: the disc is much thinner which allows for more layers than a DVD or HD DVD. I've ever read one article saying the BD could theoretically hold 200GB of data since the layers are so thin. People should just wait for the actual next gen formats to drop in price instead of buying a DVD on steroids.

I don't think this will make studios change but I see in the future an xbox live upgrade so we 360 owners can have this 50 gig games with no problems... and if that happens any company with MS support usually makes money, if they make money they will get studios, it might be a great idea for a 3rd option something for us... the poor people.

If they make cheap burners with cheap media, it might have a market. Have you seen the prices for empty BR/HD-DVD-discs? Insane!

Yeah...I'm honestly more interested in the cheapness and ability to burn data.

It's either that or hauling around an external harddrive...but this would be cheaper for games as well...like when games started coming in packs of 5 CDs...then they started fitting it all on one DVD...much better. Now games are starting to come in multiple DVDs...the option to have just one HDVMD instead would be sweet...but the drives would have to be in wide circulation.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

personally i think that blueray and hd-dvd is failing cause of the prices yes a few very few people bought them but there are major stuff out for both formats thsi format if supports regualr dvd it will take off. just cause its cheap and it plays normal dvd with an added bonus. now if you thinka bout it upconvert hd players are now saling pretty decent compared to BD and hd-dvd. this could easily be the format that everything will be at in the next few years. sorry fanboys no one really cares to see a movie in blueray or hd dvd cause of the movie prices when you can get the same quality in regular dvd. which is pretty good. i mean look at heroes season one on dvd is $39 dolllars on HD-DVD its $99 what one you think people are gonna buy? people already has alot of disney dvd's they wont go out and get the blueray just to get the few extra features and the small amount of video clarity that its touting to have. and besides people is still working on changing over from vhs to dvd. why would they want to change again so soon?
