Forums - Sales - The sales fate of the big series and there companies

I was just thinking about what might happen if so many big series are going away from the number one console.

outside of nintendo games the big and most successful series of old went to the most successful console,

the only series that broke the trend was resident evil, going to the dreamcast and gamecube primarily, and looking at the numbers they took a pretty big down swing from the previous incarnations obvisously 2 sold nearly 6 million, yet 4 is about 4 million across 3 consoles and that was after moving to the most successful console

so people are assuming big games like metal gear solid and final fantasy are going to bring up the ps3, but what if they don't, what if the ps3 drags them down with it,

seriously if theoretically that happens, it could seriously screw up the industry, obviously they are pricey endeavors so the loss could be large and to make matters worse going to the wii isn't easy as the visual down turn would be large and the xbox market doesn't seem to be as receiptive of these old guard of games.  So if konami square and anyone else that big ps3 games takes a bath on them how could this change things?  Could it really shake up the established games series?

I don't see SE going down if FFXIII sold bad and that is because they made games for othter consoles to.

If MGS4 and FFXIII did not sell as expected and did not greatly improve PS3 sales. I'd say that the industry is screwed... Ok seriously. Yea, the gaming landscape could change but I really dont see those 2 hot titles doing poorly. I've read many, many posts saying "I WILL get a PS3 for MGS4". It is just going to be an outstanding title.

So, no. I dont see your cataclysim coming down on our heads.

Metalcore, Hardcore, Punk, Emo, Rock.

Well if MGS4 and FFXIII goes bad than it means that we are close to the end of times . Seriously , those games cant go wrong , no matter how hard people want to make us think :)

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

and that's the very logic that has hurt sony's game end so badly, and the same to nintendo when they fell from grace, assuming you can do no wrong stance can easily lead to disaster

MGS3 didn't even break 4 million units on PS2's 120 million+ userbase, and didn't even break 1 million in Japan. MGS4 has been overhyped as a system seller.

FF is another story. It WILL sell alot of units. Particularly in Japan. But one system seller is simply not enough.

Important to notice is although that a lot of gamers are just buying the most popular console, consoles from different manufacturers also have different characters.

I mean that it is not sure that a game that does extremely well on a Sony console will do the same numbers on a Nintendo console with the same install base and the other way around. I think this is part of the reason why the numbers for RE went down a little, it is a series established on a Sony console and not too close to other games on the Cube in terms of Gameplay. I think this is why it sold less in relation to other titles on the Cube and compared to its popularity on the PS.

But MGS and FF are both franchises that are closely related to the PS brand and they meet the taste of Sony fans. Therefore, the fanbase for the new games will be big and the attach rate will be high too. Of course the games won't sell as much as they did on the PS2 simply due to smaller install base, but the franchises won't go down in popularity.

If it would be the case, Mario, Zelda or other Nintendo franchises wouldn't be as popular as they are anymore.

Both Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy have been seeing diminishing returns in recent years. They were blockbuster new products in the PSX era (and, yes because FFVII was a significantly different experience from earlier RPGs, it was new in a way that later Final Fantasy games were not), and the luster of that helped them sell quite well in the PS2 era. But neither of their PS3 incarnations have yet been proven to be anything but slight modifications on their previous incarnations, they're unlikely to spark the popular imagination in a way which will sell the PS3 on a massive scale. They'll probably both be good games (well, at least MGS4 will. who knows with square these days...), but they probably won't be the savior of the system that some people expect. This same effect can be seen on Nintendo consoles in the drop off in sales from Super Mario 64 -> Super Mario Sunshine. It seems possible that Galaxy will reverse trend, but I'll reserve judgment on that for the time being.

I, for one, would welcome the people behind those games working on new IPs and new types of games as their main focus.
