Forums - Gaming - Why do people love to hate Final Fantasy ?

Because with every big and well rated game there come haters, and it becomes so big, it becomes cool to hate it, because then you are different from the crowd, this is true with Final Fantasy VII, XII and GTA IV. They are all fantastic games (I haven't actually played VII, but I am willing to guess) but for some reason have massive numbers of haters, and they were all very well reviewed, and sold very well, so why the backlash?

Cause FF7 spawned these awful, annoying, emo fanboys, who think that FF7 is the best game ever....

Cause it's the same game over and over.

This. Final Fantasy is a boring, repetitive JRPG series. Final Fantasy only differs with different characters and settings. The same lame story is always more or less the same in these JRPG games.

Final Fantasy is the most main stream JRPG series based on its sales and popularity.

Looking at your games collection, you have never owned a Final Fantasy...

Anyway, is having completely different battle systems not enough for you? And the 2 main series FF games that I have played had completely different stories, as did the 2 spin offs I have played

i was only a fan of FFX

I think equating "success" with "hate", while on the right track, is fundamentally wrong.

People don't hate the series because it is popular, they hate it because it is popular despite better alternatives being on the market. One can argue the quality of Final Fantasy titles in regards to its competition, as they can with any game.
However, it is very clear that other franchises, especially recently, have been successful in pushing the genre forward and drastically improving the formula Final Fantasy popularized, yet receive little credit past critical acclaim.

Another way to look at it involves brand name. It is, all subjectivity aside, quite obvious that Final Fantasy has brought the Japanese RPG to the mainstream audience, and in many ways created that genre.
Despite this, can the same be said for the recent Final Fantasy's? Have the recent installments in the series had the same innovation and quality that those before them did? That's debatable, and many find that they fall well short of their competition while simultaneously selling much better.

The "it's the same game over and over" argument seems lame to me. I would appreciate it if somebody explained me how come FFX, FFXI and FFXII are "the same game".
