Forums - Gaming - Sony Copied Microsoft, But Where Is The Backlash?

Some things MS established or pushed in the gaming industry:

  • FPS on consoles; Okay we have seen GoldenEye, Time Splitters but there was no game that could touch Halo in any way
  • Xbox Live Arcade; XBLA was available with the release of the Xbox360 in 2005. XBLA is great for short games for little money. Awesome games like Castle Crashers, Braid or Geometry Wars (2) were created or old classic games were ported to the Xbox360 like Sonic, Street Fighter or Soul Calibur
  • Online Gaming on consoles; MS really established this. There was the Dreamcast and there was the PS2 or the GameCube but all the other online gaming devices back in the days were limited and inferior to Xbox Live.
  • Adding a HDD to consoles; MS were the first to build a HDD in every console in 2001. Ironic that this has changed in 2009.
  • Video on Demand; MS is really pushing VoD. The netflix subscription is one of a kind in this industry. There are 1200 movies available in the US, 550 in HD. And there are also 670 TV shows available, 120 in HD. That makes the Xbox360 the biggest offeror of on demand HD-content in North America. In Europe, the XBox360 is still the only console that offers VoD (Talking about continental Europe, don't know about UK). Universal just jumped in to support the video marketplace in Europe. MS is really pushing VoD.
  • Achievements
  • Foto Party
  • Party-system
  • Xbox Live Primetime
  • etc

So MS does not just copy. They created / established / pushed some very cool stuff and I don't have a problem with Sony copy achievements or other features. Of course I won't have a problem with MS copying other successful Sony-features. That is just how the industry works and that is a good thing.

Good Post, thanks.

Every video game company usually ends up copying each other. Not too many people cried foul when Sony copied Nintendo with analog + rumble into controllers. It happens when one company comes up with a great idea. The other companies are forced to either copy or improve or be left in the dust.

Of course, Insomniac's Ratchet and Clank series had achievements back on the PS2. Did Microsoft copy them?

Did they?

OP has some explaining to do.

Yep, Insomniac has been doing skill points for a long time. They're basically just achievements/trophies; just limited to one game.

Really, companies copy each other all the time so it's not surprising that someone would copy even if MS had come up with the idea before anyone else.

"achievements" have existed on games since the dawn of time, way before Microsoft started using them, so I can't even see your argument.

Not like microsoft made them, show me one gaming system that had something like achievements for all games before MS made them.

To OP: Most Sony Fanboys have alot of righteous anger.

I know this may seem bad but I am still new to VG Chartz what does OP mean?

Anyone.

 Thanks man.

every company copies other companies. thats just business. The reason M$ gets so much bad rep is because no one seems to like them because of their hard earned and well deserved IMHO monopoly in operating systems.

Long Live SHIO!

This post is full of win.

Also they did add the tier system of consoles which was also copied by SONY. I dont think any console before has done this.

XNA goes unmentioned too. it has allowed low budget developers to showcase their games and another advantage to the 360

Also in-game music.

Allowing you to install a game in your harddrive is also a first.

Well SONY did bring things into this gen:

  • First Console to remove B/C
  • First console to have mandatory installs
  • First console to replace their controller by adding rumble(not sure about this one)
  • Also the heaviest console ever
  • First console to back out of a region(Korea)

baaahh who cares we enjoy of our trophies and no i didnt know that MS got the idea first but come on! ... when MS knew that ps3 was going to have blu ray they auttomatically made that HDDVD thing that didnt work too much...
and i think the trophies are having more succes on the PS3 than on the X360... dont do they?
