I'm not surprised.

I'm curious... what happens to the Wii graph is you cut the bundled Wii Sports?

It would shift the line up since you would be decreasing the Total Software without changing TWO (Total Weeks of Ownership).

I don't think it would be very representative of the true picture though.  Wii Sports is one of the most played games, both in terms of hours and sessions.  A game that gets played that much surely slows the adoption rate of other games.

At some point I'll find the time to split the analysis into regions.  Then we can compare Japan to everything else.

What a clusterf*** this thread dissolved into...

Anyhow, those saying the thread title is misleading are correct, but routsounamanan has done the best he can to retroactively fix that.

While anyone paying attention already knew that the Wii's "attach rate" was the highest for 2008 (and what an unbelievably meaningful statistic that is...), I nonetheless congratulate Nintendo for what it's done.

Now, let the usual suspects b**** away about how X% of those sales don't count because they're crapware, all the real games are on the other systems, and the rest of the usual System Wars bulls***.

Oops, wrong thread

Attach rate is largely irrelevant. It is irrelevant when M$ touts it so just because its in favor of the Wii this time doesn't mean its any more or less important.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I don't get how attach rate is unimportant really.
I think its a big deal that wii had the highest attach rate last year. That means the console is very active. Growing consoles have high attach rates, dying ones have low attach rates.

@WereKitten: Propably the same as it does when removing the bundled software from other platforms.

...

It's not exactly the same. Every single Wii sold out of Japan came bundled with Wii Sports. Not all 360 and PS3 sold were in bundles, some of them were movie bundles etc. They would need to be adjusted too, but we don't have distinct data about the bundled sales.

We have those for the Wii, and I was wondering what would happen of the TWO/SW total charts if you cut them.

You can't simply remove the bundled sales, and pretend that Wii Sports would have sold 0 copies without it.

It is one of the most played Wii games, obviously it would have sold several million units anyways, but we don't know how much.

I think it is easier to state that bundled software counts as legitime, since it obviously affects the buyer in the shopping.
