why are 360 and ps3 so close this week?.

My theory: some people call the 360 the PS2 of this generation (I don't really know why), but last week the PS2 of the last generation (i.e. the PS2) got a price cut and ate into the 360's sales. Last gen wins!

OH NOES! SONY was right!

PS2 ate into the Wii's sales!

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

You asked if they posted a profit last quarter and to back it up you show full years numbers?

You have still yet to come back against everything I proved you wrong about. No need to worry though, I already know you won't admit to being wrong.

I know full well Sony has been losing money the last 2-years. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to have seen that. Once again though, you ONLY mentioned last quarter.

What I dont  get is that how is ms making money now???with a price cut shouldent there profits be lower??or are they making money off software sales???sony losses really shot up huh?but i expect there losses to be much lower this time...

There are a handful of reasons why 360 had a more profitible 2008 year over their 2007 year. One is, like you said, software sales. Another is the fact that they've been closing and letting go studios left and right. Xbox Live is also a big money maker for Microsoft with their recently expanded userbase.

I like your strategy though, when you know you have been proven wrong just go ahead and change your argument.

1)First Considering the PSP released in 2005. Even if I include 04 2004-2008 they still lost money.

2)Second where did I say they didnt make a profit second quarter?? I just said they didnt make a huge  profits to warrant a coming price cut. Also I still don't think the PS3 division is profitable. While they are close to even I still think they are losing money.

3) All the PS2 profits are nearly gone. Look at the chart. Its common sense. The PS2 is still making profit but its pretty obvious but that cushion is decreasing.

Its funny I proved all your points wrong and its funny how one week changes the perception of SONY's position

People ask how they could afford a price drop, but they do not wonder how they keep developing so many games.

I like your strategy though, when you know you have been proven wrong just go ahead and change your argument.

Yeah ur right but ms losses are a LOT at the moment its probably gonna take them 3 to 4 years to cover that up...or if they keep going at this rate(although there are very less chance)it will take 34 years to cover up!!!

#1. Your chart shows 04-06 being profitable. Now we are in 2009, where do you have undeniable proof that those profits are all gone? You think PSP is still sold at a lose? What about software sales for the PSP? Did you or did you not say "All PS2 and PSP profits are gone"?

#2. You have no idea if they are profitable or not. Why bring up just PS3 division? What if 360 didn't bunch up everything in their division as well? Point is you don't know.

#3. We already know the PS2 profits are pretty much drained, I am not denying that, but it still sells so that profit is still growing.

You actually didn't prove anything wrong. Your whole argument is basically "This is true because I think it is".

Sony's position wasn't horrible last week either. I am just looking at it differently than you are. You do not even try to hide your bias at all.

The main reason you don't understand those 2008 numbers is that they are the 2007 numbers lol.

The Microsoft 2008 number is for July 2007->June 2008
The Sony number is for April 2007->March 2008.

Easy ;)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

First off, where did it ever say they lost all profit from the PSP?

Second off, how do you know whether or not they are losing money right now? Sony said last year that by this time in 2009 they will begin profiting from PS3 sales, not to mention they are probably already profiting from EU sales since the console price is higher.

Third off, PS2 is no longer selling? PS2 is still making profit so how did they lose all of it?

PS3 is doing good right now whether you wish to believe so or not.

So answer me this.

PS3 selling on par with 360 is bad news for Sony but 360 selling on par with PS3 despite being half the price is good for Microsoft?

Well in all honesty, does anyone really expect a price drop in the next couple of months? Considering the PS3 is going to be recieving a hardware revision to implement the new 45nm Cell processors sometime around July, which I estimate could cut development costs anywhere between $50 and $120, I don't think Sony has all that much to worry about.

I am sure the general consensus here is that Sony will drop the price in the fall. In December it was said that production costs for the PS3 were $448 and it is possible that it may have dropped slightly within the last 4 months although I doubt it would be anything significant but once the 45nm Cell and RSX drop (which supposedly is very soon) I can see Sony profiting on each console sold, especially in Europe. Software sales will also add into the gaming divisions profits as well as PSP and PS2 sales and software for each.

Indeed Sony shouldn't have too much too worry about right now.
