Forums - Gaming - PS3 is Not More Powerful than Xbox 360, says game Dev!

PS3's being used to find cure for many illnesses...

PS3's same Cell chip being used in the world's strongest Supercomputer...

PS3's acting like homemade SuperComputers...

Multiple other game developers who have worked on PS3 exclusively say it CAN produce higher quality games then the 360.

Killzone 2 graphics, lighting, textures....

Uncharted animation and graphics....

Reality begs to differ with this close minded man's opinion. He has not even worked on a exclusive title between the two systems to even know. He is not even a PROGRAMMER!

I hope someone called some fire trucks, because this flame war will go on for quite some time.

If that is what you "understand" you don't really understand at all ...

What it essentially says is that before they took advantage of the SPEs the framerate was dramatically worse than when they took advantage of the SPEs.

OR that by offloading different kinds of load to the SPUs a game can achieve better framerate and generally keep much more calculation-intensive tasks in-frame, right? :)

Isn't this article like extremely old and biased/stupid ?

I mean, this Booth guy has been making the same game since 2004 with last gen graphics, how is he supposed to be relevant ?

Its ironic that Microsoft hasn't exactly pushed the envelope graphically to the same extent Sony has. If you want to compare exclusives, you have to compare equivalent efforts which are absent.

Do you trust people who have never worked on the Xbox 360 to say that "The PS3 is more powerful?"

You know, its strange that developers posting with anonominity who work on both platforms on www.beyond3d.com describe the differences as "Each platform has strengths but are relatively equal" for the most part. They have spilled the beans before, and yet theres no real dice from them.

That one is going to sting.

@HappySquirrel - You should take a look at the entire presentation. The 2 slides that have been posted are misleading. The developer was discussing the advantages of running the rendering code on the PPU for debugging purposes, and comparing the performance enhancements when the code is fork-lifted to the SPE's for optimization. His point was the entire game can run on the PPU while debugging, and then easily migrated to the SPE's for optimization. I would guess that many multi-platform games run 90% of there code on the PPU's, and only utilize the SPE's for special case optimizations.

Why do you guys still argue the theoretical power of the PS3 or 360? There are enough platform exclusives to determine which console is more powerful. The theoretical discussions are no longer needed.

Regarding Jason Booth, he worked on Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Both of these games look identical on the Wii/PS2/360/PS3. I don't think he is the best person to be making statements about the PS3's potential. By the way, who does he work with now?

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

The biggest fail in this thread is not the developer, it's the OP. I read this article a year ago, which means that you didn't just see this on N4G and posted it here, you actually went looking for articles that bash the PS3. It is extremely pathetic that 360 fanboys still think their system is more powerful. It may win in some areas (DVD drive speed), but in general when you put the Cell into the equation the PS3 is more powerful. Not that that's anything to be ashamed about. History has taught us that it isn't always the most powerful system that's the most successful (PS2, Wii...). So please, just put this to rest and go back to playing all the great games available on your system.

They aren't all developers and actually the amount of low level programmers posting there form a very small minority (those who are most relevant to this topic). But regardless it's one of the most interesting to read English technical orientated forums.

Virtually all Low level game engine developers agree (including various coders I know personally) the PS3 is fundamentally well more powerful than the 360. This mostly due to the Cell processor and Blu-Ray / default harddrive helps with regard to potential as well.

And this is no shame the 360 was released a year earlier and costs less than a Wii. As time goes on the technical gap between PS3 and 360 exclusives are expected to grow.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

^ The Irony is that the PS3 fans on this site will never fully appreciate the power of teh cell because they all own high end gaming rigs. (For all those Xbox 360 games).
