Well, HDDs are unliklely to increase in capacity or decrease in cost from now. We are at the limit of thieir technology.

The first 1TB HDD was unveiled in Jan. 2007. I don't see them much below $100 today, and drives above 1TB are very rare and expensive. SSDs are increasing in capacity much faster. The standard hard drive size has been stagnant at 320GB for some time.
The first 15,000rpm HDD was availible in 2000. There still aren't any speeds above this, 9 years later.
| Soleron said: We knew SSD capacity would increase over time, but I didn't expect it so soon. http://www.techreport.com/discussions.x/16720 Indeed I think this 512GB SSD from Super Talent (on sale for $1500) now exceeds the real-world density of hard drives as well as the usual advantages of higher random read and write speeds, lower power use and no moving parts. With such capacities available it is only a matter of time before SSDs that match the top-end (1TB) of HDDs in terms of capacity appear and fall to parity in pricing. |
Well then I will have to laugh at you. I expect 1TB SSDs by the end of next year.
Also Seagate announced 2TB HDDS. 500GBs per platter. 4 platters total.

Yes, but it won't push 1TB drives to the current 500GB price point. WHich is the important part of advances.
@Squilliam
Yeah, I have read the tests that have been done, but I am not really into the speed as much as I am into the security. SSD's should be much sfaer than HDD's thanks to having no motor, or moving parts that will wear out over time.

^ Everything can break, luckily you can backup with an external HDD.
Tease.

2TB hdd is under $200 now.
They could go higher, but many operating systems don't support more than 2TB drives, especially for their boot partition. That is changing though, but would be problem for people wanting to upgrade their computer instead of getting latest Windows or Linux.
Generally if you want that much data, you want to be able to access it fast. You are better off with spreading it over multiple drives for faster access if you need that much data...
O.o a lil bit expensive... but astonishing. Technology is growing so fast. I love this era
