Forums - Sony - Sony: Our first-party dev is as big as Microsoft and Nintendo's combined

With a HD console game taking between 3 and 4 tmes as much work to produce that a similar game on the Wii, and Microsoft's tendancy to pay for development (rather than buy/build developers) I would expect Sony to have a much larger development workforce ...

The real question is which strategy is the most effective?

For the development cost of Killzone 2, Microsoft was able to publish Gears of War and Gears of War 2 ... For the Development cost of Gran Turismo 5, Microsoft was able to publish Project Gotham Racing 3, Forza 2 (and will probably be able to publish another racer before Gran Turismo 5 is released) ... For the cost of those 2 Sony Games Nintendo has (probably) been able to publish Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, and Mario Strikers Charged.

bolded: link? source? where the hell did u hear that?

they are last , they are broke , whatever the amount of money they pay MS will pay more

ot: SONY FTW!!!

Sony needs to shut up and get their house in order. I've never seen a last place company to talk so much smack. They need to buckle down, figure out to get the PS3 price down, and pray that can somehow catch Microsoft for second place. Never have a seen so many different people from one company open their mouth and insert their foot so often. The phrases "talk is cheap" and "actions speak louder than words" are words Sony should consider.

I judge a company from the games they offer. 1rt 2nd or 3rd places doesnt matter. All i want is games.

Btw Sony's house is in order

What do you mean by "Sony's house in order"?

Are you completely ignoring the fact that their gaming division hasn't been consistently profitable since before the PS3 launched, and that the whole of Sony is now having losses too?

Sony has already said they'll fundamentally restructure the gaming business for profitability. This means they don't think the house is in order, and it may also mean that this quote from Mr. Koller won't be valid for long.

The games keep coming, thats all i care

Let's consider two facts.

1. Sony planned on loss-leading this gen as they have with previous generations, meaning they planned on selling the hardware at a loss and making the money back on software.

2. Most money is made from first party software.

With those facts, is it surprising to that Sony has the largest internal games development studio? If they didn't, how in hell were they planning on making their money back?

Either he's lying, which makes him a ridiculous person, or he's telling the truth and they're getting vastly outperformed by smaller teams that then work a lot more efficiently.

So either they're liars or they're unefficient.

We knew this already.

And take out the handhelds, SONY pushes out more first and second party console games each year than Nintendo.

That is very true. I bet its as big as nintendo and Microsoft x2.

Sony keeps coming out with new titles also, Nintendo just sticks with what they have.

Their former plans are kind of irrelevant now, since things didn't go as planned (they had to cut prices faster than they expected).

Surely they need first party studios to be profitable, but they still seem to have too many. Look out for downsizing and more studios merging in the next few months and perhaps years.

I don't get the negativity.... all they said is that they're bigger and they have a lot of talented developers...

Well of course it didn't go according to plan but it stands to reason that many of those studios have been in place since the the PS3 was launched with the purpose of producing software that would propel the Playstation to the generation lead.  Afterall it worked twice before

While i agree that there may come a time that Sony will be forced to trim some of the fat i don't think Sony can turn around and start operating their studios like Nintendo, nor do i think they should.  They have to stick with what they are good at.  Given that this is their best chance to make back their money i think downsizing their studios will be a last resort.
