Well, if cover system is so common in FPS games these days name me some console FPS or any FPS that allows you to go behind cover, move along the cover and lean out for shots.

Take a look at some tactical shooters like Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon.

I always thought those were 3rd person. Oh well, still doesn't make it "common".

Proof of quality and quantity

@bardicverse

Theres nothing stupid about facts, sony has bigger first party studio then nintendo and MS combined

Oh but there is about this one. See, Sony's first party is severely lackluster compared to Nintendo's. So by boasting of a larger first party, they are saying that with a bigger staff, they still can't compete with Nintendo's first party, which apparently is smaller. Thus, in turn, it can be translated that he is saying Sony's first party dev teams aren't nearly as talented as Nintendo's.

Sony... lackluster?
So what have Nintendo 1st and 2nd party studios  got in store for Wii this year, then?

Punch Out, Wii Sports and repackaged Gamecube games. Yay!

Meanwhile, Sony has lined up for PS3 in 2009...

Killzone 2 (already out), Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Ratchet and Clank Future 2, Uncharted 2, InFamous and maybe even Gran Turismo 5.

I know which list looks lackluster...

What about Tales of Vesperia along with White Knight Chronicles?

Tales is Namco, but I guess you could add WKC (even though I think it looks like rubbish).

Edit: Wait, nope, WKC is only being published by Sony.

Yeah, I edited my post right after realizing what I wrote.

Too much opinionated hate here. It doesn't matter what anyone says because it must be acknowledged that Miyamato is a game developer "god," and at the very least his classic franchises are worth the purchase of the Wii. Because of that, the Wii is hardcore because hardcore gamers once and are still playing those games. Whether or not his games are your type, there is no way around seeing this. This doesn't really mean that they are better that SONY development teams. SONY development teams have steadly increased in quality and quantitysince the days of the PSOne. There is just so much that they have to offer, period, which is reflected in the size of their combined studios. I don't see why anyone would have any problems with this which isn't taking anything away from Nintendo and to a lesser degree Microsoft. Maybe some of you are feeling the pressure of possibly missing out on SONY's offerings?

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

We have a thread about Sony talking about having a large number of development studios and it quickly becomes a thread about profits, sales numbers, everything you can think of that doesn't have to do with Sony talking about many games on their way.

It makes me think back to this, which I just read yesterday.

By the way, before I get a "Well, this is a sales site what did you expect?" response. I will quickly say " I expect it to be in the "Sales Discussions" forum area.

They're in first-person or you can choose third or first-person perspective. Don't be so accurate in details, tactical shooters are pretty complex games compared to traditional popcorn shooters, so perspective is pretty much irrelevant for gameplay here.

And yes, it's common. Your point was... cover system in FPS implemented in KZ2 is a new idea. That just not true.

I just call it like I see it. If I made a mistake, my bad.

Still doesn't make you correct in saying that Sony brings no new ideas to the table.

I suppose it might numerically be true - but sadly this comes off as more 'cock waving' marketing spin...

I do wish Sony (and MS who keep the one/two going with Sony IMHO) would quit it and focus on their own consoles/content and stop with the side-wise jibes.

i could have quoted a number of different posts in this thread that are just foaming at the mouth to rip sony.....sorry to chooose yours but i just didnt want to keep reading on.

Folks, this is sony....at one of their GDC presentations doing nothing other than actually and finally stating a pretty simple fact about amount of first party studios and or games. I saw nothing that tried slamming ninty or MSFT in any way or propping up Sony in terms of profitability or marketing or success. I dont understand why teh company finally says something accurate, during on eof their presentations and everyone here wants to talk about the subjective data.

Sony, for once stuck to objectivity and selling their product, simply becuase they say teh words nintendo and MSFT, even when its true people want to just get sidetracked and rip them apart.....

For gods sake they could have just said...."the ps3 is the only home console thats black with a glossy finish" and people would still be posting here about how sony sucks and loses money even though their console is the only black and glossy console.

Since this is coming from the horses mouth I'll assume it is true.

1. Are these studios a drain or are they profiting. I'll assume the former unless corrected with strong evidence because if they have that many employees its got to be a massive drain on their resources if every single HD publisher is losing money pretty much even with some impressive blockbuster releases I have to assume that Sony is as well at this point.

2. Is their pursuit of development excellence causing them to hire huge quantities of staff at the expense of profits. Guerilla games had in excess of 200 staff at points in Killzone 2 development and I heard that Santa Monica had two animators for every programmer and thats a lot of staff and expensive MOCAP.

1. As I recall MakingMusic setting out a while ago, SCEWWS is the most profitable part of Sony's gaming division. Think it's only San Diego that historically hasn't set the charts alight (that said, MLB 09 The Show is sitting pretty at 90 on Metacritic).

2. Please don't do a starcraft. You're coming ambiguously close to suggesting that GG was super-staffed during KZ2 development. As MakingMusic (wow, he's been useful!) has explained countless times, the vast majority of development was done by the original, moderately-staffed group before rising for the last stretch.

Edit: MakingMusic, get yo' ass in here and explain this better.

Being the most profitable part of Sony's gaming division isn't a great feat if you divide it in two (hardware and software). After all the hardware is a source of terrible losses.

I'm sure that Sony can get more profits out of its studios and IPs by reshuffling, downsizing and merging studios, and I would be surprised if they didn't do that (especially given their recent declarations).

Irrelevant; Squilliam asked if their studios were profitable or a drain, I gave him an answer.

Well, maybe I'm biased, not going to argue that =) I'm just following the common belief that Sony isn't know for it's "innovation" into gaming being compared to Ninty efforts. Usually "common beliefs" have some true inside, at least a little. That's subjective for sure just beacuse of the fact there're no measure for "innovation" regardless of what you understand by so called "innovation". I choose to believe what suit me better, like you I assume =)
