They're in first-person or you can choose third or first-person perspective. Don't be so accurate in details, tactical shooters are pretty complex games compared to traditional popcorn shooters, so perspective is pretty much irrelevant for gameplay here.

And yes, it's common. Your point was... cover system in FPS implemented in KZ2 is a new idea. That just not true.
