Then "who" is buying the ps3 and 360.....together they have more sold than the wii. If what you are saying is true than basically all the core people would have the wii? I think not and this is why, 360/ps3/wii are all sharing some of the ps2's fanbase. Also more non-gamers are purchasing the wii as well (woman and grand mothers). This is more evident when you look at wii fit sales versus sales of mario games this gen. Wii fit and sport since bundled have outsold all mario themed games so far this gen. That does not mean "ps2 core people" decided to stop playing core games, this means that new demographic are not as "rabid" as the true nintendo fanboys. This is a double edge sword for 3rd party developers, this is why the HD twins still get 85% of multiplats while the wii gets 15%of multiplats and or a total new game on rails to make up for the small number of multiplats.

When we speak of "the Woodstock generation" are we talking of all the people that were born between two dates, or are we talking about all the people who had some common experiences in the 60s?

When we speak of "a new generation of antibiotics" are we speaking about the antibiotics than came up after a certain date, or about a class of antibiotics that have some new features in common?

I frankly don't think it's strange that the issue comes up again and again. Different definitions for console generations are constantly mixed up by developers, analysts, PR guys, journalists... basically by anyone in the industry.
And yet, some people on this site are adamant in saying that the only acceptable definition is chronological, because of the one true source of Wikipedia.

@Staude: Nintendo has tried graphical superiority before, it didn't work out too well.

The chronological definition is much more useful than the technological one, as far as consoles are concerned. Wouldn't you agree?
