Forums - Nintendo - Punch-Out!! - The first Nintendo game to have Wii disc space problems

I just found this link, and though it may have been put somewhere on VGChartz before, I haven't seen it. Anyway, this is what it says:

Punch-Out!! will have many unlockables, Wii disc space was a problem

Kensuke Tanabe, Producer of Punch-Out!!, sheds some light on the possibilities of extras in the game and why some had to get cut.

“There is a lot to unlock! There are for example, characters, new ring environments, challenges, victory animations, etc.” He goes on to say,”...there are lots of challenges outside the ring. Some tutorials, training sessions, etc.”

Sounds good to us, we are big fans of hard work paying off in the form of unlockables but he also stats that disc space was a challenge to get around with this title and that they are the first internal Nintendo dev team to have such a problem with space.

“We packed the disc to the brim and there were a few things we had to leave out because there wasn’t any space left. We are the first internal Nintendo dev team to come across this problem with the Wii’s dvd, so you are def. getting a lot.”

The game is really starting to take shape and from everyones impressions it looks to have fully captured the retro vibe from the original. We will be covering this title like a blanket till the games release but expect more news on the title in the coming weeks.

To me, this sounds absolutely astonishing. Imagine all the games that have been packed into a Wii disc by Nintendo, and this being the first one where they crammed too much in. These are discs that held Brawl and Galaxy, for example. I'm very impressed.

Maybe they were trying to fit everything on a single layer DVD? I can't imagine this game using a dual layer DVD to be honest. Brawl had one hell of a lot of characters, stages, modes and especially soundtracks and it still fit on one DVD.

Brawl did dual-layer and is the only game to do so as far as I know. I highly doubt Punch-out has more content than Brawl but I would believe they max. out a single layer.

I'm quite surprised too.

Go buy Metroid OTHER M!

That is impressive. It makes you wonder how much unlockables/features it has.

Can't wait!

Well, alright then. Still, not counting Brawl ... Size issues that for example Galaxy or Metroid Prime 3 didn't have. I think it's pretty exciting. I wonder what kind of stuff they put in the game.

I thought Mario Kart Wii was dual layer too.

Anyways, this must be a single layer disc, but pretty cool none the less.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Single layer makes sense. I can't imagine Punch Out having content comparable to Brawl unless their asset management is complete and utter garbage.

Cool, I didn't expect this thing to have more than brawl.

Unless they aren't using the double layer disc like some people said... then why don't they use a double layer disc?
