During the rise and dominace of the Playstation video game systems, other aspects of Japanese entertainment culture made a rapid rise in the west including anime and Manga.
However, in recent years's animes proliferation in America seems to have fallen off quite a bit as there are no major cable networks that air anime as much as they did five years ago. The Cartoon Network's Adult Swim used to show a couple of hours of anime every night of the week but Sundays five years ago; however, now if you want to watch some anime in the middle of the night and you turn your tv over to Adult Swim, you only seem to be able to find Adult Swim's own comedy programming.
However, still, if you walk in any major bookstore, you do find at least three to four good sized shelves of mangas. To the point where it seems as if the Manga industry in the US is actually an overflowing industry. Still I don't think that so many similar looking books can really be all that great for manga in America. Are these shelves overflowing with mangas simply because no one buys them?
Anyway, I see a victory of the 360 over the PS3 being similar to a victory of Hollywood over the cinemas of Europe following World War I, and think that it will basically mean a severe lessening of the amount of anime / manga product that we still get in this country. Especially since the Japanese entertainment industry doesn't seem as if it wants to fully put its support into endorsing the 360.
Now, many people say Nintendo will keep jrpgs and anime and manga popular in the West. But with the family friendly and for everyone images that Nintendo tries to cultivate, do you really think they would endorse a game, anime, or manga with themes as dark as those found in a product like the Death Note series or even darker or racier works? I believe the heaviest types of material that Nintendo would try to endorse would be no more so than teen works like Inuyasha.
So, if there is a failure of the PS3 in the West, how much do you think that would affect other parts of Japanese Entertainment culture like anime and manga in the West?
Heavens to Murgatoids.
