Forums - Gaming - How will victory for 360 affect Japan's Entertainment Industry as a Whole?

During the rise and dominace of the Playstation video game systems, other aspects of Japanese entertainment culture made a rapid rise in the west including anime and Manga.

However, in recent years's animes proliferation in America seems to have fallen off quite a bit as there are no major cable networks that air anime as much as they did five years ago.  The Cartoon Network's Adult Swim used to show a couple of hours of anime every night of the week but Sundays five years ago; however, now if you want to watch some anime in the middle of the night and you turn your tv over to Adult Swim, you only seem to be able to find Adult Swim's own comedy programming.

However, still, if you walk in any major bookstore, you do find at least three to four good sized shelves of mangas.  To the point where it seems as if the Manga industry in the US is actually an overflowing industry.  Still I don't think that so many similar looking books can really be all that great for manga in America.  Are these shelves overflowing with mangas simply because no one buys them?

Anyway, I see a victory of the 360 over the PS3 being similar to a victory of Hollywood over the cinemas of Europe following World War I, and think that it will basically mean a severe lessening of the amount of anime / manga product that we still get in this country.  Especially since the Japanese entertainment industry doesn't seem as if it wants to fully put its support into endorsing the 360.

Now, many people say Nintendo will keep jrpgs and anime and manga popular in the West.  But with the family friendly and for everyone images that Nintendo tries to cultivate, do you really think they would endorse a game, anime, or manga with themes as dark as those found in a product like the Death Note series or even darker or racier works?  I believe the heaviest types of material that Nintendo would try to endorse would be no more so than teen works like Inuyasha.

So, if there is a failure of the PS3 in the West, how much do you think that would affect other parts of Japanese Entertainment culture like anime and manga in the West?

 Nothing, or negilible.

Um... all I have to say is... MadWorld.

Switch every time you mentioned Xbox with Wii.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I don't really understand what point you're trying to make ... There really is no "Victory" of the XBox 360 over anything (except the XBox) when you're talking about Japan. The Japaneese market could best be ranked as

  1. DS
  2. Wii
  3. PSP
  4. PS3
  5. PS2
  6. XBox 360

Due to hardware and software sales, and the only reason the XBox 360 will move up in the near future is the decline of the PS2.

Squirrel u misunderstood the OP. He is speaking of the PS as some sort of a missionary for Japanese manga/anime culture in the West.

I thought the anime cartoons of the 80s were the reason for the increased eastern influence.

I was trying to ask would their be an impact upon other Japanese Entertainment properties like manga and anime in the West if the 360 knocks the PS3 out of the Western videogame market.

I think personally the 360 "flopped" in Japan or am I missing something? I do acknowledge the mile stone of 1million in Japan currently....but I still have the sneaking feeling that RROD has inflated those numbers due to people purchasing another 360 to replace the failed one while they wait for the repaired one to return from microsoft IMOB.

The only reason Japan paid any attention to the 360 is its JRPG's thats if PS3 sells it JRPG line up and ex 360 exclusives i doubt 360 will get anymore
