Forums - Nintendo - D.Cuthbert not too interested in returning to StarFox, calls the Wii a toy

Dylan Cuthbert not too interested in returning to StarFox, calls the Wii a toy, and says Miyamoto makes what he wants, not what fans want

A portion of a G4 interview with Q Games President Dylan Cuthbert…

G4: Would you like to do another Star Fox game?

Dylan Cuthbert: (Laughter) After Command? Uhh, not yet. Maybe in another 10 years. I’ve made three.

G4
: …I have to ask you, why do you think it was always difficult for developers when Fox got out of the Arwing. Fox is a pilot, but they’d always get him out of…like the tank, the tank was cool, but it still felt like an Arwing - Why do you think people wanted to take him out of being a pilot and have him run around on foot?

Cuthbert: I think that’s all Miyamoto. Whenever I speak to Miyamoto about Star Fox, he says it’s not meant to be just a flying, sci-fi shooting game. It’s meant to be anything we want to think up. But the core fans don’t want that, but Miyamoto doesn’t really care about that. He wants to make what he wants to make, so he just goes ahead and gets it done.

Then, Mr. Cuthbert brings us back to the launch of the Wii with this statement…

The Wii is a bit more of a toy, I think.

I just lost a lot of respect for Mr. Cuthbert…not for his Miyamoto comments (they may be true), but for his opinions of StarFox and the Wii. Check out the full interview here

I wonder how many former Nintendo partners think this way, though? It would be interesting to see the frustration that might exist from within Nintendo's own household

Also: i was never aware of this person's involvement in StarFox. I know the original wasn't made by EAD, and i thought Command was made by Q Entertainment, not by Q Games. Aren't they seperate institutions?

Also Also: Why in the hell would you do Wiimote-on-the-side for StarFox. Pointer!

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Yes.. let pick on a line out of context:

G4: So you’d never like to make one for Wii where you control it with the Wiimote on it’s side?

Cuthbert: Yeah, no the Wii controller would be a bit too hard to use. I don’t know…maybe the new one…

G4: Motion Plus?

Cuthbert: Yeah. Maybe that’d be more fun to play with. I don’t know. The Wii is a bit more of a toy, I think.

To me he's saying... "I don't know let's play around with the controls and see what happens.. I haven't figured that out.. "

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Who cares about him. There are other developers you know.

Oh no! For the past two years I have been playing with a TOY!? Time to buy a new console, you know: a serious financial investment.

And Miyamoto doesn't do what gamers say they want. If that strategy worked, games would always follow internet petitions and become multi-million sellers.

^ this isn't like really third party.

thats star fox creator.
no wonder why that game haven't been announced yet :(

it seems to me that he is jealous of the genius "miyamoto". and miyamoto is always making games we want, cause if he didnt we wouldnt have the zelda, mario and other great series where they are now.

Calling Q-Games the Star Fox creator (if that's what you're doing, I'm not sure) is completely erroneous. Here are the five Starfox games, and who developed them:

Star Fox (SNES)  - Nintendo EAD

Star Fox 64         - Nintendo EAD

Star Fox Adventures (GC) - Rare

Star Fox: Assault (GC)      - Namco

Star Fox Command (DS)   - Q-Games

Nintendo created the original two, which were the only consistently great games in the series.  Rare made an interesting entry in the series, although one that doesn't really retain much of the feel of the original games; Namco's GC title has some good ideas but is overall pretty disappointing for series fans (unless I'm mistaken); I don't own the DS game so I can't rate it, but that's only 1 game out of 5, and only a portable iteration of the series.

I want EAD to take over the series again and bring us something as impressive and polished as Star Fox 64; having Q-Games pass on the Wii can only give me a little more hope that this might one day occur.

EDIT:  D. Cuthbert has worked on 3 Star Fox games, since he was previously with Argonaut, who helped to program the first game and the second (never released).  However, as I understand it (and Wikipedia confirms this), Argonaut had much more to do with programming (and the new 3D chip) than game design, as the main designers for the first game were Miyamoto and Katsuya Eguchi.

Wikipedia also says "Yoichi Yamada, a level designer for many Nintendo games, laid out and edited the Star Fox maps with a great attention to detail."

Why lose respect for Cuthbert? He's completely right here. Miyamoto is a great game designer but that doesn't mean he's perfect. Everything that ever involved taking Fox out of the Arwing was bullshit. Cutherbert hit the nail right on the head there.

Fox has been getting out of the Arwing since the (canceled) Starfox 2, so bitching about that is not only a little late, it's pretty wrong too to imply that it's out of place.

Not only that but I'm not sure where the Miyamoto crying is coming from. Sure it was his idea to put Fox into other vehicles...Starfox was his idea to begin with so it's not like it came out of left field, but Fox on foot is not a bad idea itself so much as the execution. Actually, that's not even completely true because I liked Assault, so I can share in the bitter tears.

Now Adventures...that's a different story.
