Forums - Sales - Sony morphing PS2 into Wii competitor.

@JRPG: Not quite. PS2 would also need tons of killer apps to support the motion control. Besides, isn't PS3 in practice a PS2 with motion controls.

Basically you presented the fallacious mindset a lot of publishers seems to have. Since Wiis controls are about interface, we are talking about games that more people can play, not that the purpose would be to tack on the motion controls for the purpose of motion controls, or that anything with motion controls would sell, because that "anything" isn't necessarily what people want to play. You'd need games that are specifically designed around the control method and are actually good.

If Sony would just introduce a PS2 with motion controls, they'd be starting with installed base of 0.

Nice explanation bdbdbd

Well this adds to the PS3 isn't competing with the Wii argument. Doesn't it?

Thats the point. It would be a "backwards compatible PS2" with motion controls, a PS2.5 if you will. Every Wii game could be ported to it.

They could call it something non threatening like a Pii. How genius whould that be? Sony could have a new console basically without doing much work. Hell the PS2 already rivals the Wii in power so why not?

Why not? Because it's not a very good business move.. Also it'd probably infringe on a lot of patents if every Wii game could be ported to it.. Also why would publishers waste more resourses on porting Wii games to PS2.5 when it has no install base while the other consoles continue to grow..

It'd be Sony basically saying hey, we want you guys to make games for this console which is a Wii clone, yeah divert resourses from HD development to support Wii/PS2.5 games..

It would be idiotic

The PS 2 couldn´t rival the gamecube so how the frack can it rival the Wii when the Wii is more powerful then the gamecube?

Eh, no. The Wii is so much more powerful and has a better library than the PS2. I thin kit will hurt Ps3 and Xbox 360 sale more than Wii sales.

what?? u think the wii has a better library then the ps2??

@JRPG: PSii would be a logical name. It would match Vii and Wü pretty well. Also, Sony could say in its PR that it has improved parapsychic gaming in it.

There are a number of reasons why Sony won't do it, one of them would be the resources required to support new platform.
If Sony would make the PSii; as i said in my previous post, 3rd parties have hard time to grasp the idea behind the Wii, which would mean that Sonys own devs would need to push the PSii and the resources would be taken away from PSP and PS3 developement (then again, if PSii would turn out to be successful, Sony would be able to ditch PS3). When we look at Wii, we'll notice that it lacks 3rd party system sellers completely, and there is no reason to expect that PSii would get any different support (especially when the talk was about getting ports).
You could ask why so rare companies attempt disruption, it's because of the strategy requires dedication to the strategy. Also countering the disruption with disruptors weapons isn't any easier for the same reason. If we look at 360, it doesn't have a web browser, and a reason for this is M$ wanting to protect their core business. The lack of web browser in games console of course is rather irrelevant, but it points out the problem these companies face; your counteractive "better" product is forced to be made inferior, so that it doesn't pose a threat to your core business.

As for the hardware side, if PSii was targeted to counter Wii, it would need more simplified architecture and more power than Wii has. If the console would have BC, it would also need to have enough power to be able to emulate PS2 games. And on top of that, Sony could run into legal issues, if Nintendo has patented enough stuff in Wii Remote.

Stop being so defensive, it makes you look like a pussy.

You know as well as i do that the Wii is just slightly more powerful than the PS2. Most Wii games are not even PS2 quality anyway.

All i'm saying is make a PS2 with motion controls. They are still making PS2s, just bundle a motion controler with it. Whats that 3rd party motion controler called? Freedom? This would be easier than you are thinking.
