Forums - Sony - Sony: Good PSP sales have allowed us to drop PS2 price

There's absolutly no need to drop PSP price it's very competitive compared to DSlite and even more so to DSi

@Aprisaiden

I actually don't think Sony has any interest in a PSP, or PS3 price cut. Both systems are well worth the price of admission. Howard Stringer is in even greater command of Sony now that we have rolled over to the new financial year, and he has been all about software and networking since day one. He is a brilliant buisness man, and I think that he is going to do great things for Sony now that he has been let loose.

With the right software and services, people will buy products at any price. Stringer knows this and he is going to focus all of Sony's efforts on having the best software, and services in the world. Sony has been a ticking time bomb for years. They now have all their ducks in a row.

The Right Leadership.

Platforms To Tie it all Together.

Between the PS3, and the PSP Sony can make the ultimate platform to do everything you need, all in one easy, simpile UI. The last link they need to fill is getting the PSP 3G capable. With that you can be linked to your PS3 24/7. Once they achive that, my dream of what this brand was going to become will be true. Everything I ever need is all on one device, one user name.

do you think sony would ever bundle the PSP and PS3 together? thatd be a great way to make both their platforms available and at a decent price. group them together for like $499[after PS3 price cut this holiday season], with a free PSN game or two included in the mix.

also, on the topic of bundles, i had a brilliant idea yesterday. since sony is still pushing the PS2, and wants more PS2 users to switch over to the PS3, and since the PS3 is so expensive, why not offer an incentive for the PS3 when you buy a new PS2? such as a $10 off coupon, or a PSN game, or something along those lines. i think thatd help more than anything to transfer PS2 users over to the PS3, at a minimal cost. [heck, they should have started doin that years ago though, to maximize results]

This is great news. It looks like the 3000 has cut back on production cost quite a bit, and at $169 PSP is still the best deal in portable gaming. Now that they have moved the PS2 to a brickless unit, the costs have also dropped for production, shipping, and storage space of that system. I think this is a huge factor to the price cut.

Now all Sony needs to do is keep the PS3 were it is, and continue to cram it full of awsome software and market the crap out of it, and they will have 3 very viable systems in the gaming division. The tough times are behind SCEI, this reccesion is nothing compared to the launch of the PS3. In fact the PS3 launch was probably good training for the global economic problem.

well put

Well if You look at Wii and Apple  huge price premium compared to similar competitor machines can be a great seller if joined with great marketing and soft.

A high-margin product? Means they can drop PSP's price as well if they want (not to say they want to do it any time soon)?

@KBG29 - While PS3 is excellent value at $399 SONY must be aware that in the current economic climate and while the PS3 isn't the dominate console it needs to be priced at a level where the average consumer believes its worth buying.

I strongly believe SONY is aiming for a $50 price drop this year (probably just before or at E3) in order to target a wider audience. Of course since their aiming for profitability SONY will wait until they can afford such a price cut.

(Besides PS3's last(and only) price cut was 18th October 2007... quite some time ago )

why don't you all understand? It'll bring no benefit at all by reducing the price of the ps3, there shall only be bigger losses. Right now their PS division is probably making a profit due to software, PS2 and PSP sales -- do you think they'll want to get themselves into a mess again by falling into the red?

Terrible move on Sony's part. The PSP could have used this price cut, especially considering the American and European DSi launches. They really are dedicated to failure. That being said, I'm really looking forward to the upcoming game announcements for the PSP. *fingers crossed for a new Metal Gear*
