I said last year that they would not drop the PS3 price and instead focus on software (which can be much more profitable).
A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.
I reckon, last year people thought the PS3 would fly ahead of the 360, and a lot of PS3 exclusive projects started.
Hey .. early next year we might see a similar picture for the 360.
Battlestations: Pacific PC/x360
Velvet Assassin PC/x360
But war... war never changes

Of course the usual trolls have to come out and craft these speculative stories over how important x is, and how long game y was in development like s/he works in the gaming industry. I should have known this was going to happen. I read it in the stars.

Well they are partially gaming company, thats what they do make games. I think line up for all 3 consoles look really impressive which is great for gamers, i just hope that Sony can somehow increase PS3 sales through their software because games like KZ2 or LBP were unable to move any significant hardware.

Why would they start closing studios when the studios are one of the more profitable parts of SCE? Out of their internal projects, only the NBA series probably lost money. This is the same stuff people were saying at the end of last year. SCE would be hit majorly by the redivisions, studios would be shut down, etc., but it never happened. And your condescending tone isn't appreciated. Btw, MS didn't close Ensemble Studios because they weren't profitable. The Age series has sold over 20 million units lifetime, and Halo Wars is already the best selling console RTS ever. Ensemble was closed because they focused primarily on a market that MS was straying away from. |
In fairness to TheTruthProphet, he did say "closing/merging" studios. Surely many of the studios are profitable, but perhaps they could be more profitable with some cuts or merging. By the way it's probably not just the NBA series losing money, I wouldn't be surprised if Home is a money sink too (even with the revenue from micro-transactions).
Lastly we shouldn't forget what Sony themselves said about their restructuring:

I think these game announcements are a direct benefit of Sony standing firm on the PS3 price. Price cuts cost money. Just look at what Microsoft had to cut last year to fund their price cut. If you currently own the PS3, you should hope that Sony continues to invest in game development, new features, and improving the PSN. Sony is focused on increasing value for the premium HD console, while MS is focused on marketshare.
If you don't think massive price cuts cost money, compare the 360's announced 2009 lineup with Sony's.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.
