There is so much wrong with this graph, it is not even funny.

Graph shows that PS3 sold much more than PS1 in 3 years. So it would take miracle for PS3 NOT to outsell PS1.

VGchartz doesn't have complete data for the PS1 era, so those numbers are not the PS1's true sales

Graph says PS3 sold 21 million in 3 years and Ps1 sold 8 million in 3 years. And lets say Vgchartz undertracked PS1 by 6 million ( still a LOT, probably not true), PS3 still outsold it by 6 millions.

VGC didn't undertrack the PS because it wasn't around to actually track it.  All they have are incomplete historical sales data to go by.

Actual shipments from Sony were 43 million by year 3.  I don't see the PS3 hitting 43 million by November, do you?

The PS1 data is incomplete to the point that it is unusable. If you want proof, check the PS1 sales for 400 weeks (about 7.5 years), it seems the PS1 tops out at 18,7 millions unit sold worldwide. Which is totally false.

Signature goes here!

no PS3 will be discontinued next year ... PS4 coming out next year

If it stays on the market another 7 years after dropping under $300, it can reach 100million quite easily, but reaching PS2 is a lot harder. It could still happen if, during its lifecicle, the well-off in China and India increase considerably (in this case Wii would easily exceed 200million).

So why is there Blast From The Past on the main page of the web site?

Wow... it's not often that I have threads that make me burst into laughter like this one. I think it will be a miracle if the PS3 hits 30 million by mid-November, let alone 40 or even 50 million.

But for the topic at hand, no, it won't. Microsoft has already taken too many of the HD gamers and still has enough continuing momentum for Sony to break 100 million. One of the things that I've said before was that Sony needs a price cut to keep relevance, yet they can't afford to do so. Unless a price cut comes fast, I do think they'll be locking themselves into 3rd place, with about 45-50 million sold lifetime. A $50 price cut this year might get them to 60 million lifetime. It will take a $100 price cut this year, AND another one ($50) in 2010 to have any chance of hitting 80 million and taking second place from MS.

Hardware number for the PS1 is Japan only, most likely taken from Famitsu. There is number for the last generation for America and Other but Other seem to only go back to about 2004 (which may explain the difference between the number here and the shipped number from SONY financial for the PS2)

Look at PS1 JAPAN vs PS1 ALL they are the same.
