Smart move, though I hear theres a lot of Apple fans up in arms over this advertisement. I would care if they showed the same response to Apples own commercials.

I think this is a great way for MS to take advantage of the economy. Though the "not cool enough" to be a Mac user thing seems counter productive to me. These are a big step up from the current "I'm a PC" crap.

On the other hand one can't help but be a little surprised at the effort MS has put into fighting Apple recently. Apple has less than 10% share and yet MS seems pretty darn scared.

I think perhaps a better way to improve their success is working to rebuild their brand- instead of chasing Apple. But who knows. Time will tell.

At first, microsoft(AKA bill gates and a few others) were working on windows, secretly, in apple. Steve jobs was naive at the time, he scolded and said it'd never take off. Apple was big then. Microsoft exploded on the scene, and apple over the years went into almost bankrupsty, and it was MICROSOFT which gave apple 200 million dollars to come back. They don't see them as a competition, because they are not.

It has everything to do. You stated microsoft lost, and used assinine examples, you know mac market share went DOWN after the MAC vs PC ads? Why? People don't respond well to versus ads, and it started a new movement to PC fanboys to spread the news, so the ads were nulified with people.

Apple has their niche market and it is a highly profitable and visible one. They're happy. Targeting the budget market has not been a significant part of their business plan since OSX debuted.

If anything MS should be convincing people not to buy even cheaper Linux enabled netbooks instead as they seem to be under the impression that every PC sold = a license of Windows sold.

Or maybe the Linux crowd is just too geeky and too small for anyone to take their commercial jabs at. But, the day that Linux can be used invisibly by mass market general consumers is the day that MS will really have their work cut out for them and the marketing feat will have to be something like "it's much cooler to buy better specced PCs to run our operating system that has all this great functionality!"

Then again, I'm quite the anti-Apple guy. Maybe if Macs weren't stuck between Windows and Linux with both of their weaknesses and none of their strengths I'd consider buying one.
