Forums - Gaming - Why has the Turn-Based JRPG Died? -- Are FF12 & KH to blame?

Thanks to makingmusic's "Vg Chartz Plays TLOD".....I have once again returned to the world of dragoons & wow....I am enjoying myself with some good old turn based JRPG goodness.

Thanks to replaying TLOD I intend to REPLAY FF7, FF8, FF9 & FF10 over the summer holidays.......yes event hat boring FF9 game! (lol don't shoot me soriku)

notice FF12 isn't on the list.

I just remembered & realized how fun Turn-Based JRPG's are.....a week ago I was ALL for Action RPG's....

but where did the good old days go?

Anyways Arc Rise Fantasia for wii went up a few notches on my awaited games list as its turn based!

Now FF is usually the directionc onsole RPG's head.....its the defining game sales wise for the genre.

I feel thanks to FF12 becoming a ARPG & selling like 5 Million along with KH.....that made JRPG's move away from Turn Based games

Ironic as the top selling JRPG's have ALWAYS been turn based

will turn based JRPg GAMING ever come back?

A few FOND memories from the past:

Are you happy or Displeased with Turn Based JRPG's facing Extinction?

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Don't blame KH. That's all I ask

I don´t dislike turn based battles, what I definitely dislike are random encounters, but it seems JRPGs that have no random battles also have no turn based battles, or am I wrong?

P.S....is this your first thread with no exclamation marks? XD

FF12 was turn based...

FF has nothing to do with it, ARPG's are just more maintream and attractive to the average customer, Whats harder? a getting noob to play a turn based or ARPG

I wouldn't say they're to blame, but rather the product of shifting times.

I see... I guess you don't own a DS...

I agree. Though there are some exceptions to this rule. I do very much agree with you.

Actually Arc Rise Fantasia is an exception to the rule.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

On the one hand I would say turn based has been done and done ad infinum to kingdom come. Final Fantasy has a different battle system every game. Obviously for a while they were minor changes between each iteration of FF.

Slow turn based games are one of the major reasons why many people do NOT like RPGs. That's why many have been trying new ways to implement open action oriented battle systems to try and get more people into the RPG genre. So far, FF12 included (hell I loved that battle system), its been good stuff.

On the other hand, holy crap! I'm the only person who loved the FF12 battle system.

A warrior keeps death on the mind from the moment of their first breath to the moment of their last.

Real time > turn based. That's all I have to say.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^
