Emil was very cool IMO.
I haven't finished the game, but he's pretty badass to me.

I hated to game it was even worse then Eternal Sonata....Emil wanted me to throw the disk out the window every time he complained. The game was just not well put together, Marta was the only thing pushing me forward but that was wearing off at the end thank god for the new Hot Springs scene or I would of stopped......
Former something....

LOL, did you really just say that? DotNW fits perfectly with the original ToS story and it fills in the holes between ToS and ToP. The game does get much better with time. Emil gets a lot less annoying, plus Ratatosk Emil balances out any annoyingness he may have. Emil is a more realistic main character than a lot of others. The tutorial I thought was good...oh, and a cool scene comes up soon. |
Emil wasn't realistic. His situation was entirely exaggerated and no one is that spineless.
| Soriku said: First of all, how far did you even get in DotNW? Second, his personality was created by Ratatosk so it did help cover up the truth that he was Ratatosk, who is supposed to be mean and badass and not a pussy. Heck, their personalities were the complete opposite and each had to face off at the end. So Emil's personality did make sense story wise, even if you don't like it. Anyway, Emil stops being scared at the end. |
Even in the most hostile of close knit communities he would have been yelled and blamed by everyone. He might have been beat up, but still.

Exactly, no one would follow someone so spineless. Your leader character should have something draws the rest of the cast to follow him/her throughout their journey. Whether it be their physcial ability, mental acquity, or just plain Charisma a lead needs something. Emil has nothing. Pity only goes so far. No one would take that much abuse without standing up for themselves at some point.

Characters like Emil are why we use the term "main character" and no longer use the term "hero" when talking about the RPG protagonist.
Personally, I'd rather play a game starring a "hero" than a "main character."

What main characters are hero to you?

The last RPG I played with a genuine hero was Skies of Arcadia (GC/DC).
Vyse was everything you could ask for in a hero. He was cool, dashing, intelligent, and courageous. His friends and later his pirate crew were able to rely on his strength when times got tough. Even when things looked their darkest, Vyse didn't lose hope. He didn't cry or whine or get emo. He faced every challenge that came his way.

Yeah, when you said hero I inmediately though about Vyse, he is my favorite main character in a JRPG.
| Torillian said: It picks up, but still does alot of extremely annoying things. The monster catching is ridiculously simplistic and really only serves to allow them to only give you two new main characters and fill the rest in with ToS characters that can be switched in and out. I also grew annoyed with Emil's infatuation with that badass type character who he meets in the beginning. Had so many flashbacks with that guy as the main focus I thought Emil and him were going to end up together in the end. In the end, it does enough things to make up for the faults to a point and bring itself up to an average game. |
not to mention that those ToS characters are useless in Mania Mode in the harder hidden dungeons because they don't level up at all and mobs can 2 hit them which is really stupid. really, why would i use them when my monsters hit for 9k and can teleport across the battle field or use specials that cover the entire battle field in 1 sweep?
