Sony told those attending the video game industry’s E3 convention last week that sales of its original PlayStation, launched in 1994, had reached 102m units and the PlayStation 2 console had now passed 140m worldwide in its ninth year on sale.

note they are referring to Sony's E3 2008 presentations. That being said, I think that current actual PS2 sales of 130-135 million are a reasonable estimate as I cannot imagine that any retailer would want to have piles of decade-old electronics lying around. I could be wrong though.

If you can convince me that the answer to one is no and the answer to 2 is yes than the Wii can and probably will beat the PS2.

1 is actually an interesting question, especially relating to the reliability of the hardware. The failure rate of the Wii so far is much lower than the historical failure rate of the PS2, so it owuld appear that there will be fewer hardware-related repeat buys.

 

And that makes the Wii even more impressive, with low failure rate compared to a console with a fairly high failure rate, it means it's selling mainly because of its games and not just games + failures.

As for #2...the market can support as many consoles sold as it can...there's not anything stopping it from being that high.

 

Well it's selling for something...That's for sure.

i think we will have a better picture of the situation in about 1 year...as of right now the Wii looks like it will win out, but if the Wii was going to extremely slow down sales wise so it wouldn't beat the PS2 I think it would happen in the next year

I'm surprised at all the PS2 hate by all the wii fans, i guess with no good games to play all you have is this site to bitch on.

And the PS2 is still selling very well no matter what you guys think. And no doubt the wii will top it one day, the same with the DS. The Wii is the "IT" thing, something the PS2 never had, all it had was the best games line up ever.

 PS2 games never had the legs Wii games have because PS2 had a steady release of AAA games with kept stealing the thunder of older games...

The Wii games that still keep selling have been released over a year ago...

i doubt it. 140M is a HUGE number and it has happened over 10 years. I doubt the wii lasts 10 years.
