Forums - Gaming - Wii VS. PS2 who will win?

From an article I read, the Wii is currently the fastest selling system the market has seen- that being said, one has to question the longevity of the system. The ps2's success was phenomenal; the gamecube and xbox combined only sold around 45million.

Personally, I don't know if a system can top the ps2's mark this generation. Next generation- maybe.

With the way the Wii is selling in America and the hype that is surrounding it. I would have to not agree with that. The Wii is selling somewhat on par with the PS2 or better. And as developers begin to realize its cheaper to make Wii games than HD games and they also begin to find ways to use the Wii-mote. We will definitely see a take off on the Wii.

Creativity is what will drive the Wii pass the PS2.

And unlike most 'shipped' figures, doesn't that 140 mill include units shipped as replacements under warranty? At least for the first so many years of the PS2's life?

Why would Nintendo cut the life of the Wii short? They've never done that when they were the market leading console. In fact Sony's 10 yr plan is nothing compared to the NES' lifetime, even the SNES' lifetime was longer than any Sony platform. That sort of reasoning is borderline insane.

I really don't think alot of people grasp how ridiculous Wii's numbers are. We take it for granted now "oh another 600k in a month in America alone..whatever" Realize the ps2 only did this ONCE outside of the holiday season, Wii has done this in every month save for what july and some other month. The Wii can only go so long breaking ps2's records before it breaks its total record.

As others have mentioned, the cards left to play are so abundant its not even funny. Colors, pricedrops, bundles etc. You know, all the things their competitors have already done. You may not want it to or may not think it "deserves to" (whatever the fuck that means) But its damn near a certainty, and understand that it is only a good thing for our industry.

Read TWoO's post again, he pretty much breaks it down as to why Wii will probably just gracefully leap to the #1 spot on the all time list. Come september it will only be two consoles left, as the NES will fall then.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

It's 140 mil shipped, not sold.

"The PS2 is the best selling console to date, having reached over 140 million units in sales by July 2008."

Units sold 140 million (as of July 20, 2008)

Yea, that would be a stupid thing to do from nintendo.

Two things concern me about the wii beating the PS2.

1. Will the wii reach a saturation point?

2. Can the video game market really support 250 million consoles sold?

If you can convince me that the answer to one is no and the answer to 2 is yes than the Wii can and probably will beat the PS2.

1 is actually an interesting question, especially relating to the reliability of the hardware. The failure rate of the Wii so far is much lower than the historical failure rate of the PS2, so it owuld appear that there will be fewer hardware-related repeat buys.

Sony themselves said 140 million will be shipped by the end of 2009. The number sold to consumers is much lower.

Wikipedia =/= fact.

The wii has already taken off and it's not because of 3rd parties. Frankly I doubt they would ever "figure it out". Nintendo alone will see the wii through and 3rd party contributions will be minimal at best.
