Forums - Website Topics - Will the upcoming site update allow editing titles of threads we make?

I know this may be a foreign concept, but you folks could simply proof your title before you hit "Post". Just a suggestion.

The same way people are so aware that typos in thread titles are mere accidents don't try to mock the OP for bad spelling when it's a simple mistake?

Wait they don't, so why do you think just telling everyone to proofread is going to go better when most users aren't even aware that spelling errors in titles are mere mistakes?

This isn't asking you to do anything for us. This is asking you to make it possible for us to do things ourselves. I know this may be a foreign concept, but people can still make mistakes even when they normally watch what they type.

You're being asked to proof a single line of text you type. Everything else is editable. If people were watching what they were typing then this wouldn't be much of a concern. It's the haphazard manner in which people post topics that has resulted in screwy thread titles with spelling mistakes.

I don't want this implemented for two reasons. The first is that people will abuse the privilige. This is why we don't have it currently. The second is that if it gets implemented, it will have to be controlled by the staff because of reason number one, which is simply an annoyance because far too many thread titles are mispelled/missing words/misquoted/etc. I'm being totally honest when I say I just frankly don't want PMs all day long asking for thread title adjustments.

But I did not suggest a mod-controlled system. So that has nothing to do with this. Others did, but that is not about what I suggested.

And if you don't like abuse, just allow temporary editing until the first reply, or after the first few if someone points out a typo. That way, because mistakes do happen, we can correct anything we didn't catch the first time, but after the first reply or so, it's stuck. Not mod-controlled stuck. Stuck period.

I know it doesn't seem unreasonable to just expect us to carefully go through a title before posting, but it is unreasonable. Some users are doing this on their coffee breaks. They don't have time to just carefully proofread thread titles. This isn't journalism. This is a message board. It's meant to be user friendly. If this was Wikipedia, with their strict posting standards, I would expect to be told to double check, because that is the nature of that site. That isn't so here.

You don't have to implement this, but don't tell us it's strictly our fault if we make honest mistakes. That's like telling a car buyer to just roll the windows down if they want air conditioning. They're going to have to drive well, but that is meant to make driving well more comfortable.

Just as here, we're willing to spellcheck and correct our posts. I just want the option to correct more of what we do.

well, it isn't VGChartz fault someone typed the wrong thing, so it must be the users fault.

Honestly, spell check is built into browsers now, so it shouldn't take more than 1 second to do a quick spell check which would fix the vast majority of the problems.

Personally, I'm indifferent about the ability to edit titles. But if I had to decide, it would go on the very bottom of the queue of things to be done.

"don't tell us it's strictly our fault if we make honest mistakes."

"well, it isn't VGChartz fault"

Why did you get "if it's not our fault, it's clearly your fault"? That's a false dichotomy.

And spell check is not built into every browser, nor do the ones with spell check work in every box you can type in (for one, spell check in firefox currently only works in the quick reply window, not in the thread title box or the rich text box; for another, Opera doesn't seem to have a spell check at all, or at least not one I can easily find).

Furthermore, not every typo is wrong spelling. I have this habit of typing "not" when I mean to type "no" (just did it right there and had to correct it) or "now", which often completely changes the meaning of what I am typing.

So no, browsers do not provide the easy fix you are thinking of.

You don't have to do it, but stop insulting my intelligence by acting as though it should be easy for me to fix the problem on my end. I wouldn't even be asking for this if it was that easy.[i/]

wrong, You can spell check any text field by right-clicking and then clicking "check spelling". In fact, I just did it right now. As for using Opera, I can't help you.

And as I said, spell checking would fix the majority of mistakes. Not all of them, but most the ones you see. Also, I'm not insulting your intelligence. I just think most people aren't aware of the tools available, and were never taught that proper spelling and grammar are important. I learned to type on a typewriter, so proper spelling the first time around was extremely important, and the best we got was crappy white-out that hardly worked at all.

I honestly did not know that. You are talking about firefox, right?

As for the rest, I still stand by that if it was really that easy, I wouldn't have brought this up. Perhaps you could at least post reminders in big, bold letters on the new thread windows?
