Those people would be wrong.  That kinda bothers me, when people compare sales of consoles to handhelds.  It's different.  If the DS passes the PS1 or 2, it'll be amazing, but should be put into context.

PSP is still doing really well in Japan.

2009 is the year of the PS3! (in japan)

PS3 is doing way better this year than it has for the past two years in japan. I wonder How long it will take for it to reach 4million in japan

Go Nintendo DS..360 sales are disappointing.

Well, those numbers are depressing. I mean I'm glad the PS3 is holding up this nicely and all, but overall those are some sad numbers.
DQ, MH, FFXIII and FFVXIII can not come fast enough. Japan needs a jump start badly.

I meant to say that handheld sales may be cannibalizing console sales but I see thats not the case. Perhaps the problem is that JP is not getting any home console games that are tailored to them this generation. Even games that would be typically built for the Japanese like: Resident Evil, The last Remnant, etc are now made with the west in mind. Japanese devs are no more making JP games and no one else seems capable of taking their spot.

Therefore, if you were a JP gamer, there probably isn't much to play. Perhaps this is why the Japanese people are holding off on this generation of consoles. Either thats the case or the population is just really old now.

WOW, the DS is going to reclaim the first place of the best selling console ever in Japan, only 4 millions to go.

I think those numbers are a testament to how well both are doing. Sony seems to be posting very steady numbers while Microsoft has improved a lot. I think they should both be proud of these figures. Sony moreso because of the economic situation the world is in and the PS3 price point.

Edit: I think a discussion on these numbers would make a good thread about the console trends in Japna this gen. You should try that and post the Wii numbers.

wouldnt it be funny if sony were waiting for the ps3 to outsell the 360 consistently before doing the pricedrop! ms wouldnt know what hit em..
