Forums - Nintendo - GDC: Wii gets SD card upgrade

I just watched the video demonstration on Joystiq. Basically, you select the new SD card icon on the menu screen, it shows all the games on your card, and when you select one to play it temporarily downloads it to the Wii's internal memory (only takes a few seconds), and then gets deleted from there when you quit the game.

I wonder if this feature allows you to play these games on a friend's Wii from your SD card, since you still need the SD Card to play?

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

wow.....i spoke too soon on that thread i made. this solution is pretty good. So, to be clear. You can load them off of the SD and you don't have to make room on the Wii for it.

If I understand it correctly, this is basically the case, with one caveat: there has to be enough space on the Wii for the game to run in the first place, so in order to play the 300 block title from your SD card, there must be 300 blocks on your Wii. Not a big issue, mind you. Also, I could be wrong here: would someone let me know if I am please?

you are correct

i reset mine up tho cus of the new menus, now all games on the sd (20 pages of spots too on it, so if you back up channels, you can hide em in the back) so on the wii theres tons of free memory.

it looks really insane seein my wii with 1200 blocks free

but yeh seperate menu for games, and channels now, so wii space is no problem

Cool, thanks!

That's what I want to know. Is like old school where you can take the game cart to a friends and play? Probably not as peole would just copy the game from SD card to SD card, there must be a encryption that ties that specific game to your specific Wii.

But there's only one SD Card slot, and games are deleted from the Wii console when you transfer them over.  I assume you can only transfer them from the SD card to the Wii they were originally downloaded on.

How is the performance ? I mean if you play from the SD card .

BTW SD card cost is costantly falling. I paid for my 2GB one around 6 euro a couple of months ago.
So more the time pass and more cheaper the medium get. It is on the shoulders of the consumer to choose the best size/cost ratio to his needs.

I'm almost positive that with the new SD card update - A new memo will be passed along to Wii Ware Developers that the 40 Meg game size limit will be increased significantly.

It shouldn't be affected at all, since it temporarily copies it to the Wii's memory.  It only takes a second to do this, and then you're technically playing it from the Wii like we always have.

But it will likely take a few seconds to copy the game to the Wii, and then delete it at the end. Nothing too long, though: doing that right now never took me more than fifteen seconds for the Strongbad games.

Yes, you do have to copy it to the Wii, but he was asking about performance, which I took to mean how well it runs during gameplay.

For anyone who hasn't seen it yet:

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.
