Forums - Gaming - Patcher: "This is the Last Console Generation"

He does make a valid point. 3rd parties are struggling with all these rising costs. I expect to see successors to all current gen consoles, however the HD twins need to have a much longer lifespan than what we're used to.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^

You guys realize that a pretty hefty number of industry professionals agree with him, I hope. He didn't make this up out of thin air -- he's just assembling feedback, and providing what boils down to a pretty common sense analysis. He's said some crazy stuff in the past, but this comment is a lot closer to the truth than you may want to believe.

I really hate to be a pain in the ass and I'm not trying to bust your balls, but can you provide proof that a hefty amount of industry professionals agree with him? I mean, I know major publishers and developers will be supporting OnLive, but I haven't heard anyone other than Patcher predicting the doom of consoles.

Nope.  I can't prove a thing to someone else who doesn't already know for the same reasons I do.  Its just my comment.  You are not obliged to take my word for it in any way.  Dismiss it at your leisure.  This iz teh interwebz.  I am just some random dude, and you will never know different.  =)

i dont see dev cost raising much next gen i think that was the worst statement in the article.

That's interesting.  Why would dev costs not get greater, if there's justification for a whole new generation of consoles, to begin with?  Are you suggesting that the next generation will be... the same, from a technological standpoint?

i think the tech will follow the same path which would mean better devkits from the start, easier coding, more efficient coding, better understand fot developers since theyve had this gen as a warm up. this gen baffled some devs at the begining but next one theyll have a hang of it right out the gate. also 3rd parties could port over their graphics engine and maximize it instead of total new ones or major over hauls making licensing engines easier and less costly

He may be right, the world is supposed to end before then......

Nintendo still doomed?
Feel free to add me on 3DS or Switch! (PM me if you do ^-^)

I really want to believe you. I really do...

As for rising dev costs... it's murky water. The thing is, they're attempting to develop technically ambitious games when a large part of the market isn't asking for that huge jump.

i would have to respectfully disagree...what he's talking about may happen one day but I think the big three will continue to make new consoles for sometime

I started making videos for youtube; check them out.

So... the next gen will make life easier on the devs, by costing the console makers more money to produce the consoles and devkits, but keeping the price low for the consumers? =)

I agree with the cost thing but that's still limited thinking. Nintendo has already shown video games consoles can expand in ways other than more graphics.

I think this generation will last longer than others because of the costs to MS and Sony (and 3rd party publishers) and Nintendo won't change until sales fall off due to competition, saturation or consumer disinterest.

The next generation will be about how we experience and interact with games, not graphics.

i expect there to be one more console generation before everything standardizes and goes digital..

hello how are you.

I think what he means is that the shift from this generation to the next won't be as drastic as the shift from standard to high definition was. Instead of new engines being developed, the old ones will just be tweaked, reused, and/or sold for a lower price... I think that's what he's getting at.
