I agree with the cost thing but that's still limited thinking. Nintendo has already shown video games consoles can expand in ways other than more graphics.
I think this generation will last longer than others because of the costs to MS and Sony (and 3rd party publishers) and Nintendo won't change until sales fall off due to competition, saturation or consumer disinterest.
The next generation will be about how we experience and interact with games, not graphics.
