Forums - Sales - What will happen to the Wii if Freedom takes off?

http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/965/965841p1.html

* Freedom is a motion sensor add on from a 3rd party being released for the Xbox 360 this fall and very likely the PS3 some months later.

I put this in the sales thread because the only possibly thing this add on can do to the Wii is steal some sales. I don't, I don't think anyone here does and I don't think Microsoft, Sony or the people making this expect a 3rd party delcine of games on the Wii. So lets not get in to that, this is more about sales.

Ok it may seem crazy something could knock the Wii off its purch, but this add on offers, basically the Wiis unique selling point, it all depends on the support "Freedom" gets, how well it sells ... well basically it stands more chance of failing than suceeding, but there is a chance, and a very big chance if all involved play their cards right, that this could take off.

A cheap add on to play HD Motion sensor gaming on the cheapest console in the market VS a remote packaged with the console itself to play Standard motion sensor games on a slightly more expensive console. On paper it looks good but that doesn't really mean anything as such.

Won't affect the Wii at all.

Nothing. It's third party and it obviously won't be compatable with 99.9% of games.

Serious question as I don't know and am interested, how many Wii games use motion sensing on the Wii?

Assuming it does, the same thing that happens to every market leader as a new entrant gains ground, they compete over market share.

There's alot more that the XBox would have to do to actually compete in Nintendo's market. This is a step in the right direction, but it's no where near enough. It'll have to become a "white good", alter it's market perception, among other things.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Unless MS/SONY advertise this like mad

nothing

+ I feel its a matter of too little too late in order to do anything to the wii now

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

NOthing.... Your average soccermom is still going to the shop asking for the Wii.. not the " Microsoft Xbox360 Arcade with seperate 3rd party Freedom motion sensor add-on without Wii Sports which she played at a friends house"

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Ok so its not going to dethrone the Wii, what about Gamers? do you think if it gathers enough 3rd party support it could sway some Wii only owners to buy a 360 or PS3? what with it having the Wii's main function + HD gaming and everything else the PS360 has to offer that the Wii doesn't?

Well, the announcement of Freedom certainly is an interesting one, but like all things, it needs the support to really take off... and so far only one game has been announced for the peripheral (which is also coming to the Wii interestingly enough).

But if it does take off? I still think that Wii has, by now, become a household name for this generation of consoles, like PlayStation was before it. The momentum will continue, regardless whether the Freedom is successful with the other competitors.

Time will tell.
