Forums - Sony - More evidence to support possible $299 PS3

As I said, I don't know where it is. This was in January. I don't care enough to find the info myself. If he wishes to know the truth, he shall search for it himself. I just wanted to set him on the correct path is all. :]

If you want anyone to have any faith in your thread, you should be the one searching for the link.  Until that time we all can take it with a huge grain of salt.

People spurting off lies, false #'s and stupid stuff use that excuse all the time.

According to iSuppli, the PS3 cost $448.73 based on October 2008 prices.  Based on this, this $500 model was probably a profit, and the $400 model a small loss.  This was the 65nm cell model.  I have not seen an updated price breakdown since then.

when i first read the threaf title i was thinking 'thats actually a smart business decision suspend the model you lose the most money on until your able to lower costs' but the like people said 40 > 80 in price thats why they switched.

And remember two things about this estimate:

1. It was based upon exchange rates at that time (and they have been quite volatile lately)

2. They are for the materials only. It did not include little things like assembly, delivery, publicity, etc.  (It is silent as to whether this included a controller -- but a similar study on the Wii did not, so it is a point for discussion).

Basically, Sony will probably look to bundle until (a) the holiday season or (b) a more favorable exchange rate (lower value on the yen).

yes it only includes parts but isnt the cost of those parts based off retail price. which includes store cuts on all the parts and non bulk discount. manufacturing and bulk pricing shouldnt be much more than that. also shipping is in the rp too

Geez, why do I even bother on here anymore?

Out of all the gaming sites I use, this one is by far just chocked full of negative people.

Notice how I made 4, yes 4 points on why the price MIGHT, stress MIGHT drop and all of you got so caught up on the whole 80GB/40GB rant.

Everyone thus far has pretty much IGNORED the fact that the most expensive components will be cheaper.

I guess we could call that reverse-cherry picking?

You seem to be ignoring the currency issue. The strength of the yen is the biggest obstacle to the PS3 seeing a price cut. If it wasn't for the current exchanage rate issues the PS3 would have most like received a $299 price point by now.

your 'evidence' is just pure speculation. the console is still selling at a loss despite hardware advances and dropping the price, as sony has said time and again, will put them into more red ink.

there will be no price drop in the foreseeable future. don't get your hopes up.

Since november of 08 sony has started to make a profit on every system sold.

Source?

It was an article posted on this site back in january or something, it was around when I joined. I don't remember where it was from, but someone from sony talked about how 360 dropped its price and the PS3 didn't drop in price because they wanted to start making a profit to show the bigger sony company that they can make money. He stated they have been making money on each console since november. It was over looked because of the 50 thousand killzone 2 threads. Look around I am sure you will find something.

Not possible.  With the PS2, PSP, PS2 Software, PSP Software and PS3 Software all profitable something needed to drag the last quarter profits down to just 4 million. If the PS3 hardware was at all profitable then the games division would have made more than 4 million.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Why should we trust your words more than the other guy's words?

Truth is something provided with evidence, not just all talk. Who knew if the article you read in January was not just another person's wishful thinking?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

a 40GB HDD nowadays isn't cheaper than a 80GB HDD

A 40Gb is around $10 MORE than an 80. There are very few options that small these days..

Trying to convince me the Wii is a real adult game machine 'if you play it right' is like trying to convince me Tofu tastes great 'if you just cook it right'

Can't believe how many Sony fans want their favourite company to go bust.....
