Forums - Microsoft - BBC Watchdog Programme- Xbox 360 Scratched discs

Actually, I've heard several reports of people who just had their X360s too close to their subwoofers, and again while playing Rock Band or Guitar Hero, getting their discs scratched. When I say too close, I don't mean on top, either -- a few feet away, actually.

It *is* a problem. You should never have your 360 vertical, for this reason, and the ventilation reason.

After my 360 rrod they replaced the dvd drive and it stopped scratching my discs. The original launch 360's most likely had unreliable dvd drives.

I just told you why already

Mine is an Aug 07 model and I have not had any issues (Touchwood)

That said it does make me mad when large companies do not take their responsibilities seriously.

Hope the Class action lawsuit forces the big M to pony up. Fair is fair guys.

Even though it's not been proven?

It's just down to them using drives without rubber bumpers in earlier drives that were in the 360s. The "problem" would only occur - at least from what has been proven when the 360 was moved when a disc is spinning.

How could a disc be scratched otherwise, it's simply not possible.

It's just careless kids who don't show enough respect to expensive objects. If you drop a vase on the floor and it cracks, you don't expect a free replacment do you? Until it's proven otherwise I don't see where all these comments like yours are coming from.

I know there's plenty of them, but then there are plenty of stupid people around. I'm yet to ever hear from anyone who has experienced this without any doubt of authenticity.

No one's been dropping 360's on the floor. No console has had this problem except the early 360's. I've had a Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2, GC, original Xbox and only the 360 has rendered a disc unusable.

If you watch the vid you will see that the fault can be replicated by even the lightest of shocks.

No tiliting, no contact with the console itself. Just some referred shock such as someone being heavy footed or as is implicitly stated in the video a book being placed down near the XBox.

I think if someone even jumping in the same room as the Xbox can cause the fault then there is a problem.

Heck "Your In The Movies" even gets you to jump and run around as part of the game.

As I stated I have had no problems with my Xbox but I have it placed away from my main play area on its original box on a carpeted floor. Obviously that provides sufficient protection from shocks.

Fair play, thanks for the heads up...Until now it has all sounded like urban legend. Cheers for posting.

I feel like this was covered a LONG time ago. Is this still an issue or was today just slow news for BBC?

weird thing is that I kinda had this problem ONLY with mass effect and Fable II. Both these games are data intensive and one day I got these circular rings around both these discs and I thought they were done for..

But it turned out they were actually marks caused from the laser mechanism or some sort of grease smudge that came from it.

Gave the discs a good rub and they play like new although the discs have fine hair line scratches now on the surface.

Thanks to the NXE update most games that really seem to make the dvd drive spin into overdrive I install to the HDD.
