Forums - Microsoft - Xbox key to Capcom's Western success

In spite of the platform's relative lack of success in the Japanese market, Capcom has made a push over recent years to support the Xbox 360 with titles aimed specifically at Western gamers. In an interview with Capcom's PR, Keiji Inafune—head of R&D and the brain behind the likes of Mega Man and Dead Rising—revealed how the console was key to the company's recent success in the Western market.

"I think I can only get away with saying this now, but I really thought that using the Xbox was the only way to break into overseas markets, and I took that hypothesis all the way," Inafune said. "I think the success of these two titles (Dead Rising and Lost Planet) was a major achievement for our company. That the Xbox 360 was such a big hit, and the products that we made for the overseas market were so well received was extraordinary."

The interview suggests that Inafune faced difficulty with plans to use 360 development as a way to break into the Western market, something which ultimately turned out to be successful. However, this seems to be changing for the company, as the majority of Capcom's recently released and upcoming titles, such as Dead Rising 2, are going multi-platform.

No good games are key..

Not just for Capcom either, release truly innovative games either sequels or not and you'll have hot sellers on your hands.

Seems to me they used 360 much better than SE currently are.

They went exclusive with a few titles, got good attention in the US and some decent recognition, then promptly switched to multiplatform to get better sales afterwards.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

its posted before ?

Capcom has just been on top of their game this generation. Everything has been golden

At of the day Capcom is a business and any for any business to expand and survive, Loyalty needs to be throw out of the window.  If it were to stick only to making games for its own country's PS3, Capcom would be in financial difficulty right now.

Look what happen to Free radical's HAZE.  For making Haze only for the PS3, the company shot themself in the head and now their finished.  If they made HAZE multiplat for the Xbox, PC and PS3 I belive there would of sold at least 2 to 3 million copies and may now still be in business.

The Xbox 360 is the console that sells the most games, like the PS2 was last Gen and no company can ignore that.

Not necessarily.

It's more, releasing something that's been done before, but make it seem like it's really new, do it a lot better (or as good as) and it'll sell well.

I'm pretty sure every innovative game (or nearly every) this gen can be linked to have been derived by an older game that didn't sell well and fell into obscurity. Prime example is Gears of War, Kill Switch did it first, but Gears is often noted as being the origin of 3rd person cover/blind fire etc

And even then success is not guaranteed.

I believe this is an incredibly old quote.
