Survey proposes Netflix service for Wii

Netflix may be looking to expanding their service beyond Xbox 360. According to a consumer survey mailed to a Joystiq reader, Netflix may provide their service to Wii owners. "Imagine that, as an added benefit to DVDs by mail, Netflix offers its members the ability to watch movies & TV episodes instantly on their TV via their Nintendo Wii, choosing from a library of over 12,000 choices.

According to the survey, the Netflix service will be enabled through a "Netflix Instant Streaming Disc." The disc would need to be placed in the Wii every time someone wanted to use the Netflix service. Unlike Microsoft, it appears Nintendo will not bundle Netflix into an upcoming firmware.

The existence of this survey doesn't necessarily mean Netflix support on Wii is confirmed. However, it does suggest the company has been investigating the possibilities. We're certain Netflix is eager to tap into the millions of Nintendo fans ready to try the streaming movie service.

Interesting that Nintendo would allow Netflix to publish software for Wii, considering Nintendo has plans for their own streaming video service. I guess that they're planning to deliver different sets of content, and Nintendo is content to keep their position firmware-based.

100,000 Japanese Famicom users used the damn thing to check their taxes/finances so it wouldn't be surprising to see Nintendo try to expand the Wii's functionality.

could be just a ploy to get MS to spend more money on exclusivity rights

I would probably get this. I'd rather it be firmware though.

Not likely considering they still are having a hard time finding a solution for extra storage. Net flicks is not only a streaming service, but also a provider of digital downloads for ownership.

That makes no sense what-so-ever. This would just be pulling a stunt to try and teach them a lesson. If they wanted to weasle more money out, they would privately tell Microsoft that they are in talks with other console manufacturers for the same deal. Honestly though, I can't imagine why Microsoft would try to fight to keep it exclusive. This isn't a huge selling point for anything. Its just a nice feature to round out multi-media capabilities. I am just saddened that Nintendo is going down that road so much lately.

Since when can you digitally buy movies off of Netflix? Further more, why the hell would Netflix send out this survey without considering those options in the first place? Offering a streaming only options seems very easy for them to provide considering they sell their own little box to do the same thing. The limited storage space for the Wii is a known, and certainly been factored in by Netflix before sendign out a survey to gauge customer demand.

I wouldn't mind having another TV using Netflix. I already have 2 TVs with Netflix enabled (via 360). You can have 6 devices using the same Netflix account.
