WHY A PS3 PRICE CUT WON'T CHANGE A THING

Most likely the PS3 will get a price cut very soon. It is the common sense thing to do if you are Sony. So the question really shouldn't be when? Rather it should be, will the price cut even matter?

For three years now the PS3 has been unable to sustain any momentum that it has gathered from time to time. While there are many contributing factors for Sony's tough outing this generation, the one main factor everyone agrees on is price.

So here we are amidst rumors that a PS3 price drop is imminent. The buzz has been there for a while, but now the slight hum is a pounding noise. Game developers have started to speak out publicly for a PS3 price cut. Sony has been firm and unflinching in denying all rumors.

Price cut or not the PS3 would still be the highest priced of the 3 consoles. And to the parents of eager kids everywhere, the lower price Wii and 360 are a more appropriate choice given the economic conditions that every family is starting to face.

Sure the PS3's cheapest model is a better value than the Xbox 360's basic model. But to most consumers this is unknown. We gamers at times tend to forget that not all consumers know the latest gaming news. The average consumer just doesn't understand the value argument.

Finally the PS3's target demographic is an older audience. Which is shrinking year by year. The target demographic for the Wii and 360 is younger and continues to grow larger each year.

It may be to late for Sony to catch up in the console war. However, by no means should anyone say they are finished. Sony will keep supporting the PS3 for years to come. The price will keep falling. There will be sales increase's as the price goes lower and lower over the years. The other two systems though are so far ahead of the PS3 in terms of pricing that I question if Sony's price cut will work, or if it is already too late.

You should be beaten, burned to ashes then someone should throw your ashes from a plane

i think it will atleast bring the PS3 to 360 level sales. And thats at the minimum. I truly think that it will allow Sony to slowly diminish the 8M+ gap between the two.

Long Live SHIO!

Two things:

1) How many price cuts has the PS3 had so far - five? And why would this one be so revolutionary when the others weren't?

2) I have a feeling that most "mundane" customers don't see the merit of the "value" argument, because it really has none. What would I do with the cheapest BR player/game console on the market if I don't want it anyway?

I don't think most people care that PS3 has a BR player and more advanced guts than its rivals - likewise, most people don't care that the Wii is inferior to the PS3 and the X360 graphics- and performance-wise. Would a mere price drop really make the PS3 that much more desirable over the two other systems?

Moves like this make it seem like Sony's just beating around the bush because it has forgotten how to score.

older demographic shrinking ??? this is the fattest and oldest civilization in human history. is the other way around . wenstern civilization is getting older and older (including japan). 1.3 children per woman. old and fat soccer moms are the new gamers.

Rol, I think you're underrating the impact of a pricecut just a tad.

360's pricecut in September completely reversed momentum and nullified all the PS3 progress in Q1 and Q2 of 2008.

5 price cuts? Even 2 is questionable, there has really only been 1. And it was a big help - PS3 was getting beat, week after week by the 360 - After the price cut(s) it was outselling the 360, until the Microsoft cut the price of the 360. You really shouldn't talk about something that you have no knowledge of.

"Would a mere price drop really make the PS3 that much more desirable over the two other systems?"

To lots of people, yes.

I think I mentioned that a PS3 pricecut would revert the momentum between the PS3 and 360.

But above that you'd said that pricecut impact this gen is overrated.

I guess it's just a matter of opinion; I would class a reversal of momentum as significant, and therefore the impact not overrated.

LOL at "5 price drops".
