Forums - General - Questions on today's monarchy?

I have a few questions for those whom live in countries that have a form monarchy. There are also a few questions for those who don't have monarchs. This is only due to interest, and I might add in with my thoughts. The reason why I chose this site is because it is  one of the more diverse sites in the area of nationality that I frequent.

What country do you live in, and who are the monarchs? What do you think about them?

Does you monarch have any political power? If so, how much? If so, is it an absolute monarchy?(I don't believe there are many of those left today, if at all?)

Do you think your monarch should have more power? Less power? Stay the same? Should it be abolished totally?

If your country doesn't have a monarchy do you think it should establish one?

Did your country previously have a monarchy, but not one now during your lifetime? Do you think it was a good or bad thing that it was abolished?

Does your monarch act as a symbol? Do you think they do a good job as a symbol?

What do you think of monarchy as a whole?(anybody could answer this one.)

I do not feel I know about politics enough to comment on this

Oh it is a symbol.

They don't do a good job anymore......but back when Princess Diana was alive the popularity of british monarchy (or maybe just diana) was at its peak.

What do you think of monarchy as a whole?(anybody could answer this one.)

Its cool.....we get special food on the queens birthday!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I live in a country that has never had a monarchy (since we're independent, at least). And monarchy is something that I can't comprehend, as I don't know why someone would be superior to me just because s/he has "royal blood". At least that's me, but I'd never recognize a monarch in my country

Just to comment on that, these are the countries with an absolute monarchy:

Brunei

Oman

Qatar

Saudi Arabia

Swaziland

And personally I hate monarchies, I believe they don't give any freedom to the people. Thank God my country doesn't have a monarchy (Egypt). But has something else ;)

Wait do you hate all monarchies or just the absolute ones? It does seem to me that a monarchy can't really share power with another form too well. I get this idea because most seem to be where the country stipped them of all powers, or they still have total countrol, and there aren't too many half and halfs.

@Zexen_lowe What do you think about non-hereditary monarchs?

i live in the UK, the queen is Elizabeth II

The head of state, theoretical and nominal source of executive, judicial and legislative power in the UK is the British monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II. However, sovereignty in the UK no longer rests with the monarch, since the English Bill of Rights in 1689, which established the principle of Parliamentary sovereignty. Nonetheless, the monarch is still known as the sovereign.

The British sovereign possesses many powers, including the right to choose any British citizen to be her Prime Minister and the right to call and dissolve Parliament whenever she wishes. However, in accordance with the current uncodified constitution, the Prime Minister is the leader of the largest party in the House of Commons, and Parliament is dissolved at the time suggested by the PM. For a bill to become law the monarch has to grant Royal Assent. Queen Anne was the last monarch who withheld Assent: on 11 March 1708 to a bill "for the settling of Militia in Scotland". Other royal powers called royal prerogative, such as patronage to appoint ministers and the ability to declare war, are exercised by the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, with the formal consent of the Queen.

Today the sovereign has an essentially ceremonial role restricted in exercise of power by convention and public opinion. However the monarch does continue to exercise three essential rights: the right to be consulted, the right to advise and the right to warn.[3] As a consequence of these ideals, Prime Ministers hold weekly confidential meetings with the monarch in which the sovereign holds the right to express her opinions.

In formal terms, the Crown in Parliament is sovereign even though in practical terms the political head of the UK is the Prime Minister (Gordon Brown since 27 June 2007). However, the real powers of position of the monarch in the British Constitution should not be downplayed. The monarch does indeed retain some power, but it has to be used with discretion. She fulfills the necessary constitutional role as head of state, and with the absence of a distinct separation of powers as in the American model and a strong second chamber, acts as a final check on executive power. If a time came to pass, for instance, when a law threatened the freedom or security of her subjects and citizens, the Queen could decline royal assent, free as she is from the eddies of party politics. Furthermore, armed removal of her by Parliament or Government would be difficult, as the monarch remains commander-in-chief of the armed forces, who swear an oath of allegiance to her.

I'm not sure about which goverments constitute a non-hereditary government, but I'm against a lifetime goverment, so if said monarch serving time is not by terms but till his death, I'm against it. If it has a set term of years, then in the end it's not much different to a president (as long, of course, it has been chosen either by the people or by representatives chosen by the people, like a parliament)

There is nothing wrong with a Tyrannical form a government, as long as you have a competent tyrant as a ruler.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

What country do you live in, and who are the monarchs? What do you think about them?I live in the Netherlands. Our monarchs are Queen Beatrix, and next in line is prince Willem Alexander with his lovely Argentinian wife Maxima. Our next ruler will probably be Queen Amalia. I'm quite fond of our Monarchs. Beatrix is the older type of aristocrat. Well spoken, educated, hold good ties with other monarchs. Willem-Alexander is basicly the frat-boy of royalty. He's almost always present at huge sport-events, partying with "the commoners". Amalia is 5 now I think, and adorable.

Does you monarch have any political power? If so, how much? If so, is it an absolute monarchy?(I don't believe there are many of those left today, if at all?)

No they do not have any real power. Queen Beatrix is asked for gratifying certain laws but that's it for domestic issues. Abroad she seems to have more power as she is, at times, used as a powerfull negotiator in countries where royalty still matters. For instance, she co-axed Thailand (I believe it was Thailand, or Taiwan) in a prisoner-exchange treay a few years ago so we could get Dutchmen who would otherwise be executed for drug-trafficking off the hook.

Do you think your monarch should have more power? Less power? Stay the same? Should it be abolished totally?

I think it's fine as is. The monarchy has little true power (there should never be to much power in one individual) and the queen serves as a very powerful symbol of nationality. Most people are fond of our monarchy, and it tends to unite us.

What do you think of monarchy as a whole?(anybody could answer this one.)

Awesome, but try to keep the spending down somewhat!
