Forums - Sony - Frame Rate Issues and Newer Versions of the PS3

ON TOPIC(instead of feeding the troll) overclocking the cell is as easily possible as it was on the psp. if it happens, it would be a max of a 10% increase(like the psp), they'll use a firmware update for existing systems and the new systems will have it standard. it would have the same effect as upgrading the CPU in your PC.

another thought??? what if they just unlocked the 8th SPE? it would let new games take advantage, while old games are unaffected.

@valen200, where do you work, wal-mart? no 1080p sets at all? that's pathetic, i live in west texas and the local bestbuy outsells hdtvs about 3:2 over sdtvs. there are many consumer electronic stores in dallas that don't even carry sdtvs anymore.

While Sony could up the speed of the Cell, it won't happen because that would fracture the user base.  The die shrink is really meant to cut costs.

There are 8 SPEs on a Cell chip for redundancy purposes.  When testing the chip, if only one SPE is 'bad', they can disable that unit and still use the chip.   If none are bad, they still physically disable one of the SPEs.  You CANNOT update this in software.

Numbers are like people. Torture them enough and you can get them to say anything you want.

@vizunary

Let's just say I am extremely glad I sold my company stock a week ago.

The difference with a Bestbuy/Circuit City/ Electronics chain and a Chain like Wal-mart or Target is the audience. Wal-mart appeals to the masses. I am sure that in Dallas Wal-mart would at least carry one 1080p. It is a very large city, and can support a large population with that desire. In most places, Wal-mart does not have enough shoppers with an HD interest to justify the shelf space that could be used to sell something else. People who go to electronics chains are more interested in the top of the line stuff. They are more likely to seek out new tech and become early adopters. Wal-mart shoppers want "value" or low prices. If a tv is $98 it will sell like sno cones in the desert, it doesn't matter if it lacks frills.

The fact of the matter is this: a technology is not dead until we stop carrying it and a technology is not universal until we sell it. We still sell 3.5 floppies, vhs tapes, cassette tapes, and coax cable like nobodys business. We have stopped selling VHS movies and Vhs players that lack a dvd player. We just got dual core computers a few months ago. Our selection of 1080i tvs was expanded a few months ago, but we still only sell them from time to time. We have been making an effort to start getting a few better tv brands in general, but a lot of them are still crappy. We just added Blu-Ray and HDDVD a few months ago, and the selection on both is small.

I have not seen a SDTV in a store for almost 1 year now, almost half of Best buy /future shop is HD-TVs, they have about 35 different HD tvs on display, even at wal-mart they have only HD-TV's.

@valen200, what kind of backwards redneck shop due you work at?

^^^ An extremely large one in the midwest, actually I have worked at three stores with this company and the story was the same at each. Do you live in a large city like vizunary? That would explain the greater amount of Hd bias.

HD gamers are by definition early adopters. I think this tends to skew the perception of how many people own cutting edge tech. Since we got rid of layaway we have had a harder time moving items over $500.

There is nothing redneck or backwards about my city, or my store. It is simply mainstream.

First, the PSP isn't overclocked.  The CPU is designed to run from 1-333 mhz but was locked at 222 mhz to conserve battery life and heat dissipation.    Sony didn't send a firmware to overclock the PSP, they sent a firmware to unlock the CPU full speed.

That in mind the PS3 is already at it's designed speed.  You can't overclock a closed system CPU such as those in home consoles.

GranT, I respect your opinion and all but do you think you could start thinking them over for a few minutes before you post them?  Not only can X360 do 1080p but if screen resolution was so important, console gaming would have died years ago with the advent of SVGA monitors for PCs 2 decades ago.

True 1080p is needed this generation, Sony will leave the PS3 on the market for a long time and they have thought ahead, while the guys over at Microsoft have have been forced to add tons of stuff to their system to compete, 120gb HDD, HDMI, another heatsink.

The xbox can't do 1080p from what i have heard, they use HDMI to upscale the image or something. Plus the wii is last gen technology, wii fans already want a HDD, DVD/blu-ray/HD-DVD add-ons, plus lots of stuff the system was not made for. The wii is very close to the same specs of the first Xbox, and still lacks in several locations as Shaders and some other stuff.

Within 3 years all new TV's will be 1080p, and MS/Nintendo will be left behind to fail with the crap they made.

You really need to be better informed before you walk into an argument with statements like "MS/Nintendo will be left behind to fail with the crap they made."  Oh, loved your elitist "backwards redneck" comment too.

It can do native 1080p. It was locked, and then later was unlocked via a firmware update.

Yeah, GDDR3, motion controllers and WiFi are soooo last gen.

-wii fans already want a HDD, DVD/blu-ray/HD-DVD add-ons, plus lots of stuff the system was not made for.

No, we don't want those actually.

-The wii is very close to the same specs of the first Xbox, and still lacks in several locations as Shaders and some other stuff.

Specs please? Numbers? Blueprints? Something? Ok, thanks.

-Within 3 years all new TV's will be 1080p, and MS/Nintendo will be left behind to fail with the crap they made.

And suddenly everyone will change their TV's to new 1080p? Yeah yeah...
