Forums - Sony - Things Sony can strip from the PS3 to help lower the price

imo , the ps3 is the only complete console this gen (it was the xbox last gen). removing anything would make it incomplete. therefor it only makes sense to keep it as it is and pray for a ps3 slim this xmas with a faster br reader and external power supply.

nothing it has been striped already

if anything the wifi and a smaller HDD to compete with the arcade

but i think its fine as it is they should add some more usbs to 1 up the 60

That's an odd one because i have had little trouble playing on-line, games have dropped out on occasion but not enough for me to look for alternatives.

2. Out of box BD MOVIE playback - They could make a hardware dongle that unlocks BD MOVIE playback, much like the MS DVD remote for DVD MOVIE playback. $25

How would that actually reduce the price for Sony? All the hardware would still have to be there because the PS3 *must* be able to read BluRay discs.

Not everyone would be guaranteed to buy the movie playback so they would lose even more money on that.

And things I would probably remove:

  1. Wi-Fi adapter and sell a seperate one like MS does.  Not everyone will buy one but it does cut the cost $10-15 and will make a lot of money for the people that do buy one.  The genius of that is parents will buy the cheaper one and then find out they need that expensive adapter.
  2. No game or movie packed in.  Many PS3 SKU's seem to have a movie or game packed in, don't do that if you want to cut cost.  If they need to, they can just throw demos preloaded on there.
  3. Smaller Hard Drive.  Again, doesn't cost them much to put in a bigger hard drive but it's a good way to make a small cut.
  4. SIXAXIS instead of DS3.  Yeah, the SIXAXIS is shit but it's cheaper than the DS3.
  5. Two USB ports instead of four.  Another small cut but every little bit helps.

The problem with all these, is that they have used these arguements against M$ in the past and it would be horribly hypocritical if they did something like take out the wi-fi, and removing the BD playback is just plain stupid

@ twesterm:
1. I have already addressed
2. Most packages now don't have games packed in, they are just special editions
3. Well they need plenty of room for installs, and I don't know how much they would save
4. No, they have stopped making the SIXAXIS, and would be a devolution in quality
5. They have already done that

Large issues like dropping games happen only occasionally; the headshot you just missed (even though you thought you were dead on) or the hitch in your giddy-up when your running; it's the minor packet loss/drop issues and lag that I found the most infuriating.

I doubt the loss of Wi-Fi in the PS3 would drop the price signifcantly enough for me to justify having three systems (barely have time to play the two I have), but I will never use the wi-fi when I do.  I do use it on my wii...but don't play any wi-fi multiplayer games on the wii.

I find it so surprising that 360 owners are ok with MS ridiculously overpricing the Wifi Adapter. There is no way the adapter costs MS more than 30$ to make and charging consumers 100$ is just ridiculous. I bought a Wireless N router for half that price. Sure, it's good business for Microsoft, but as a consumer that shouldn't be important to you, what's important is getting a good deal. Any other industry, If you sold something ridiculously overpriced like that the majority of consumers who understood its value would be outraged. But for some reason 360 owners are ok with MS ripping them off like that. Now that's devotion.

Did you do the "M$" thing on purpose?

Just checked Newegg for hard drive pricing:

Can't find a 20 gig.

40 Gig is $55.99

60 Gig is $54.99

80 Gig is $44.99

It may be cheaper for Sony to upgrade the hard drive.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Wi-fi is so useless...

Yes, that's why nearly every hotel, coffee shop, book store and mall have Wi-fi hot spots.

This.

Hah maybe in America, and ofc you can bring your PS3 to book store and start playing Killzone 2 online.
