Forums - Nintendo - Square Enix really owes Nintendo

Soriku: According Vgchartz FFXII sold 4.94 that is why I said 5million. Its hard to tell how much FFXIII will sell but it all depends on how much PS3 sells and how good the game is. What does FNC stand for?

Soon came along Sony. They ushered SE to mske games for them and taunted them with CDs. SE agreed and left Nintendo with their N64. Sure, money talks, but Nintendo saved them from going down. They left Nintendo to drag around for 2 gens and make Sony King.

You forgot the part where Square, upon leaving Nintendo, convinced Capcom and Namco to leave Nintendo as well and join them on Sony's console. It was a real kick in the teeth.

Square will go where they think they are best suited, and the only people they owe are their shareholders.

Ultimately I think it's fair to think that many of their series, especially those where the majority of the fanbase is Japanese, will end up on Nintendo consoles. Simply because of numbers of Sony vs. Nintendo consoles moved, at least at the current rate anyway.

Personally I think the FF series (after XIII) moving over to Nintendo could well be a good move. Apart from the fact that I don't see myself laying all that money down for a PS3 and would like to play a FF, I think that the series needs to move in a different direction, the last good installment was 9. Perhaps moving to a new console could spark a change in the style. Not to mention the fact that it could prompt new gamers to check out the older games in the series on vc or remakes on the DS.

I cant wait till the ps3's price drops, it needs to sell already.

Final Fantasy 7 began development in late 1995. At this point in time, the Playstation was still being beat by Nintendo both hardware wise (by the Gameboy) and software wise (by the SNES). This, of course, is based on the Japanese market, which was Square's main market based on the last Final Fantasies. By late 1995, meaning December, and not say, September, the Saturn was selling incredibly well and rivaled the SNES in software sales. So, where was the money really? Still, Sega and Nintendo.

But, of course, you're right. One of the main reasons Square Soft left for the Playstation was the fact that CDs were suited much better for FF7.  In fact, to quote,

"Called "Final Fantasy SGI", the demo featured polygon-based 3D renderings of characters from Final Fantasy VI in a real-time battle and incorporated interactive elements.[61][64][65] This experiment led the development team to decide to integrate these design mechanics into Final Fantasy VII.[61] However, as a result of the high quantity of memory storage required to implement the motion data, 3D models and computer graphics effects involved, it was decided that only the CD-ROM format would be able to suit the project's needs."

So, I'd say that your post wasn't that far off. But let's read some other things...

"They left Nintendo to drag around for 2 gens and make Sony King."

Although the Final Fantasies definitely contributed, the main reason the Playstation won is a dent in Nintendo's image and an overall better library of games. So, what was the best selling game on the Playstation? Gran Turismo. Games like Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot also propelled Sony into success.

"This gen...it's different. Nintendo has the lead and if money talks, the Wii is here."

This generation of videogames is not as simple as some generations past. The Wii is leading in Japan software wise (assuming we're talking only about the home console market), but often losing out to the 360 in America. But, of course, Square is a Japanese company and RPGs are still a mostly Japanese focused genre.

The Wii would definitely speak to Square's strengths, but to say NIntendo is already in the lead, at least in the home market, is a tad foolish.

"Sony is getting dragged around and that will continue because HD isn't mainstream"

So, now you're some sort of sorcerer? The Xbox 360 is an HD console and it's incredibly mainstream, reporting high sales on shooter and movie based games.

I could go on, but I have to be going, so in my closing statement...

Stop with the damn Kingdom Hearts on the Wii. It's getting annoying. I, on the other hand, am a sorcerer.

*Predicts you calling me a Sony fanboy*

I think that if the FF series and the KH series stays on the ps3 exclusively. The sales during that time period will be ps3>wii (Price drop, and software increase GT5,MGS,etc..)

This is my opinion: SE was going bankrupt 'k? They had money to make ONE more game. Since it was going to be their last game, last fantasy, they called the game Final Fantasy. It became a HUGE hit and SAVED SE from going bankrupt and they continued the series. All thanks to Nintendo and their fans w/ a high userbase, and thanks to SE themselves for making a *GOOD MAIN SERIES TITLE.* So they made FF 2-6 after for the NES/SNES. Soon came along Sony. They ushered SE to mske games for them and taunted them with CDs. SE agreed and left Nintendo with their N64. Sure, money talks, but Nintendo saved them from going down. They left Nintendo to drag around for 2 gens and make Sony King. This gen...it's different. Nintendo has the lead and if money talks, the Wii is here. But people should know why FF XIII is still for the PS3. This gen (currently) Sony is getting dragged around and that will continue because HD isn't mainstream, and Nintendo is looking for a WIDER audience. These casuals (the wider audience) may even go hardcore or normal gamers in 5 years+ in time for next gen and might stay Nintendo for the T-P support and the Wii 2. Now if money talks...SE better get their act together and make Wii games. Bring on the KH, SO, DQ, and ULTIMATELY FF. At least bring KH and SO this gen, with DQ X maybe or stay DS. Fabula Nova Crystallis might be holding back FF XIV. So lets go on to next gen... Next gen Nintendo will pursue HD and probably have PS3's power or CLOSE and dev costs should go down next gen so if they get the series that saved them and back to the company that helped them it should look better than FF XIII and dev costs will be normal. Instead of risking it to the PS4, they could pay back Nintendo. P.S. Woops! In the first-second paragraph "SE" should've been Square.

so square owes nintendo for nintendo allowing square to publish a money-maker on their platform... right.

if we want to talk about 'saving square' we'd have to talk about final fantasy: spirits within.

nothing persona soriku.... i'm not a fanboy... i'll be getting a wii this december... but please... its making me sick how you say Wii at least 2 times in each single post... Wii this... Wii that.....

remember that Final Fantasy: Spirits within movie? it bombed so hard that it brought squaresoft almost to bankruptcy. Sony bailed them out and they own 8 % of the shares.

So Squaresoft should be move thankful to Sony... than Nintendo.

See Square doesnt owe anything to Nintendo. Nintendo was there only choice if they wanted to make a game. Then they went to Sony's PS1 because making Cartridges were to expensive so Nintendo screwed themself by saying Screw you Sony and your Disks.

fgsduilfgasuklwgefidslzfgb4yiogwefhawi4fbielat5gy240bh3e

so SE owes Nintendo because Nintendo allowed them to make their breakthrough game on their system. that is really, really pushing it.

No SE owes Sony because Sony bailed them out when they almost went bankrupt due to the making of that bad movie.

EDIT: And 'taunting' is def. not the right word here. I believe you mean enticing.
