On average an HD game has to sell 500k to break even (if it has a 15M budget)

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I'm currently working on my thesis and took a break to post here (I am currently playing Gears of War 2 an hour each night though to unwind).. So you scored against someone that was preoccupied with something else. I still stand by my original statements before the thread got off-topic.

Well, that works if the publisher receives $30 per title (which they might on a $60 title) and that there is no marketing budget (which I would doubt on a title with a budget like that), but I don't think that is a reasonable estimate either for the development cost or break-even point for most "Hard-Core" games that people fixate on ...

Legend does have a point that originally, no publishers were interested. His point and his post would have been much clearer had he specified that.

That being said, you were using that as proof that Nintendo doesn't care about hardcore titles, right? I kind of forgot now. It really didn't have anything to do with Rol's point. :P

Austria can only score if their games are played in virtual reality.

lets put it this way. most people who are buying the wii are not upgrading to the HD consoles why? because alot of wii owners never played video games in the first place. so to say that hardcore gaming is dependent on the casuals is a joke, and hell when is the last time besides madworld u saw Ninty put out a hardcore game, and yes the conduit is coming i know i know

I didn't read the entire thread so I apologise if someone mentioned this point. Many "analysts" say HD gaming is expensive to develop for due to increased graphics demands, yet the PC has had HD resolutions and above for years without those excessive costs.

Developers not managing budgets will kill HD gaming not either of the consoles. This just seems a cop out by developers to get a bigger slice of the pie in my book and in fairness perhaps they have a valid point.

if Sony and MS are "Destroying" Hardcore gaming, then MS destroyed JRPGs and the Japanese gaming market.

Hardcore games arent a "sustainable business" um ok lts see...Halo 3...Gears of War...Resistance....COD....Killzone...Oblivion....GTA....MGS 4....I can continue on for ever Hardcore gamers are the ones driving this business without their loyalty to videogames this generation would have NEVER came at all....Nintendo should be blamed for destroying the gaming industry...making a cheap console with shovelware to attract "casual gamers" who god knows if they will ever become true gamers....and not buy shovelware like WiiMusic...WiiSports...WiiFit...also The Ps3 and 360 were released WAY before we hit a recession so while HD gaming does cost more money than Wiigames to develop...it is not their fault were in this unstable economy as of right now and Publishers and Developers are having a hard time making profits...
