Forums - Gaming - How Sony and Microsoft are possibly destroying hardcore gaming

Hard core gaming will never die!!! Some studios will always continue to produce games if there is a demand for them. Everyone go out and buy your favorite hardcore game

Long Live SHIO!

The increased development costs of this console generation and the burden that it has placed upon developers is terrible. I hope that Sony takes another direction with the PS4 because, to be honest, I don't think graphical improvements are important anymore.

"HD graphics" isn't part of hardcore gaming. Casual games like Solitaire and Bejeweled have been HD far longer than hardcore games.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)

what a stupid post.

I hope in the 8th generation, Sony and Microsoft don't push for photorealism. The development costs could very well cause several third parties to go bankrupt.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Don't be fooled by the word "possible". Kim Possible has that word and there is never any doubt when shes about.

Tease.

I think you are forgetting a small thing, namely making a game for multiple platforms.

Hardcore games are most certainly still a sustainable business, and saying it will be depending on the "casuals" is quite a stretch for as long as we don't know what the PS4/X720 are going to be like.

If it were easy to generate profits off of hardcore games on the HD consoles, third party publishers would be in better conditions than they are right now. Losses despite record revenues. That's something to think about.

I didn't say it was easy, I said it was sustainable, but you have to play it smart. EA learned this the hard way, and they have said that it was probably stupid to release a lot of their blockbusters alongside everyone elses blockbusters in the holiday season. They also only released Rock Band 2 on Xbox 360 in PAL, and at the same time said that Rock Band 2 was one of their titles selling below expectations last year, causing loss.

My point is, it's certainly doable. But saying it's Sony's and Microsoft's fault is pretty stupid, it's like saying that it's Nintendo's fault that "casual" games are selling well on the Wii compared to "hardcore" games. Nobody says you have to max out the hardware.

You need about 1m to break even on the average HD game, so nearly every single worthy HD title made profit. Wii can get what remains.

Not in Japan, except for MGS4, FFXIII, GT5 and that kind of stuff.
