Well, the point system for Club Nintendo (Japan) actually uses two separate systems. When a member gains points for registering a product (for example, 30 points for a game of 5,250 yen or more), those 30 points are added to both a "savings" account and a "ranking" account. Members can trade in points from their "savings" accounts at any time for a variety of gifts that are available all year. These gifts include things like playing cards, stationary sets, DS cases, etc. The points accumulated in a "ranking" account are not traded in; rather, they determine the level of membership in Club Nintendo. 200 points or lower is the "normal" ranking, 200 to 399 is the "gold" ranking, and 400 and above is the "platinum" ranking. Since I had accumulated more than 400 points during fiscal year 2008, I was eligible to select from a few (three, I believe) special end-of-the-year "platinum member" gifts. I don't remember what the other choices were, but the Golden Wii Wheel was clearly the best choice.

They do the same thing in the US, and I'm already a platinum member for this fiscal year. However, I don't know if we get to choose are year end gift, as this is the first year they have done the points system.
