Forums - Sony - Starcraft on the PS3 running Windows hosted on Linux

Nice for people who didn't know about it though. I'll still play on my comp though.

As will I.

I still have to take the plunge and install Linux on my PS3. But it will be a nice weekend project, thanks for the tips.
It will be nice to play Speedball 2, Kick Off 2 and FFVI from my couch, and it will be an infinitely less clumsy setup than on the PC for the multiplayer games.

what consoles can the ps3 emulate with linux?

Apart from many computer systems (Amiga, Adam, Amstrad CPC,Apple II, Atari ST, Commodore VIC 20/PET/Plus4/c64/c128, MSX, Tandy TRS-80, etc), Scumm and Arcade games:

- SEGA Genesis, SEGA Mastersystem, ColecoVision, NES, Snes, Gameboy Advance, NeoGeo, NeoGeo Pocket, Atari consoles, Lynx, Odessey 2, TurboGrafx-16 /PC Engine ...

There are more and surely more will be available in due time.

You could always run Starcraft on a PC running windows? Actually its probably more interesting that they got Windows running on it more than anything. That in itself is worth a little lulzsor.

NO WAI !

On the rest it's actually possible running all windows on it, even vista :P it just runs like hell because of the fact that vista wasn't made to run on it and ps3 wasn't made to run it. (it has to be emulated through linux aswell which slows the process down some more)

Check out my game about moles ^

BTW here a nice tutorial on how to set up WHDLoad Amiga games, so you don't have to go through AmigaOS, but rather play the games directly from YDL.

WHDLoad versions of Amiga games have the advantage of loading faster as you won't be emulating the 3.5 inch diskette loading routines. They often also include enhancements like high score saving, copy protection scheme removals, compatibility enhancements and minor bug fixes.

Thousands of classic Amiga games have WHDload install files to install them to a real Amiga harddrive or in this case to a virtual Amiga harddrive.

@ Ajescent

If you decide to emulate multiple consoles on the PS3 be sure to check out the cool Wahcade emulator frontend:

I may consider emulation when I'm brave enough to upgrade my HDD. (no idea why but I see bad things happening if I try).

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

I did it very easily. Hardware-wise it's dead simple, there's just a single screw holding the HDD in place. You plug a new one in, fasten the screw back and you're done. Then you'll just have to format it from the on-screen menu when you turn the PS3 on.

As for your settings and data, you can easily copy them to an usb drive and then restore them.

Sad but _important_ exception: some game data are locked and can't be exported and restored. Killzone 2 and Motorstorm:PR in my case. Your trophies will be kept, as they are linked to your PSN id, but your checkpoint in KZ2 and rank in multiplayer or unlocks in Motorstorm will be lost... Or at least I did not find a way to recover them, if someone can correct me, please do.

Savegames can be copied manually, however game data can only be restored by using the backup utility, for files like Singstar Store purchase data this is actually crucial. The Backup Utility in System Settings will recover just about everything except from maybe temporary usable content.

The storage medium must be big enough for restoring everything, so if for example you have a USB mass storage device of only a few GBs, be sure to delete all non-crucial stuff (or for example move file by file manually to a computer), like easily re-downloadable content (like Playstation Home, Playstation Life, PSN game trailers), non crucial game data (some games which have large harddrive installs). Killzone 2 and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift have no harddrive pre-installs, the game progress data should be kept and are relatively tiny, check out the GameData description before deciding to delete GameData from the harddrive.
