Forums - Nintendo - Capcom's Wii Engine problem and Resident Evil

I have to disagree with you on this subject. Capcom established Resident Evil fans on the Wii with the port of Resident Evil 4. These fans want another Resident Evil game like RE4. It's not easy for them to find a substitute game nor do they want to go and buy an HD system to play a RE game. They want it on the Wii. Capcom said that RE4 and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles were test to see if RE games would be successful on the Wii. They were and those fans expected Capcom to deliver on their promise and they did not. Therefor these fans are upset and are reacting emotionally. This happens. People need to vent their frustrations. And the only way to make change is to make their voices heard. If they do not speak up and voice their satisfaction or dissatisfaction then developers like Capcom will continue to develop the games that these fans do not want and think that are doing them a service.

Your point is well taken, but my argument is a bit different than this. I'm not saying "get an HD console lol," or "Capcom shouldn't have to make a RE4-style game on the Wii because of X." And I'm certainly not trying to say that Capcom's putting as much effort into most of their Wii titles as I think they should.

What I am saying is that Capcom's clearly spoken, and for now it does not intend to change its stance towards the Wii. That's unfortunate and stupid of them. However, we as Wii owners now have plenty of options when it comes to picking up great games on the system: Capcom's a loss, but there are plenty of talented developers who have already stepped up to take their place on the Wii.

To use an imperfect analogy, a dude at a quality buffet shouldn't be too bummed that Ruth Chris' steak is not on the menu.

And while I understand perfectly why you'd want another RE4-style game on the Wii (oh boy do I understand) it appears to me that Capcom's set its course already, and writing angry posts on internet forums isn't going to help. Capcom knows what Wii-owning forum writers want; that's been made perfectly clear over the last two years. But demonstrably, they don't care about us. So why should we care about them?

Basically, I've realized that the prize for passing all of Capcom's tests is to be given yet another test. While I don't mind the newest test, I have to say that I've gotten bored of being treated as a lab rat. I'm going to go with some of the other companies, companies which pander to me rather than expect me to bark on their command. It seems much more fun that way, and I'm hoping all of this site's Wii owners come and join me.

I think that's why some people are complaining. There seems to be very few quality "normal" games, or traditional modern games coming to the Wii, and that's what they want. A lot of great Wii games tend to run the table from simple fun to crazy out-there niches. There isn't a whole lot of middle ground. It's probably why so many people are stoked about the Conduit. The people making it blatantly said they're trying to make a traditional shooter specifically for the Wii.

Personally I'm getting kind of bored with "normal" games lately, so I'm jazzed at all the stuff coming out on the Wii this year. But I can understand people who want more traditional stuff getting frustrated.

I getcha, and I CAN understand why many Wii owners are frustrated, especially with the bait and switch so many third-parties have been pulling. What I'm trying to say is that it's time to get past that. Either the traditional games are coming, or they're not, and nothing we scribble in this lonely corner of the internet is going to have the slightest effect on the giant publishers' executives (most of whom have probably never even heard of this site, let alone visited it).

So instead of complaining about it (and thus ruining the moment for those of us who ARE looking forward to games like RE:DC), I'd like to invite those Wii owners to take a new tack: go out and find the games on the system that interest you. The Wii's library has grown enough by now that almost all genres are represented on it. More importantly, this is a great chance to expand people's gaming boundaries, and try genres that they normally would floss over.

For example, while I played Time Crisis quite a bit I wasn't a particularly big light-gun guy until Ghost Squad/HotD, and UC sealed that deal. GTA turned me off sandbox games: Bully turned me back onto them. I'd pretty much written off Squeenix games until I tried MLaaK (I now consider them on probationary status). Etc. etc.

There's plenty out there, if people are willing to put a bit of effort into looking. Why waste our time and energycrying over one or two publishers, when the rest of them are lining up to make games for us? There's only so much time/money/attention that we can devote to gaming, so why waste any of it on the companies that aren't bending over backwards to please us? That's basically what I'm saying.

Right... dont know whats going on right now, but i just want to through out there that i highly doubt Capcom has a Wii engine. REUC was made useing past GC assets. Nothing really new. And REDC clearly has the Leon model straight from RE4.

That just means they are reusing assets. Engine are general game development tools.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

They are just lazy and don't want to spend so much money on a Wii engine. Too bad they can't use Nintendo's engine it runs at a perfect 60 frames per second. Or High Voltage Software which is only 30 frames per second but still good.

Monster Hunter 3 likely had a Wii utilizing engine. Who knows what else it would be used for.

That's also what I'm thinking which mean Capcom is capable building a good engine on Wii. It's just that they don't want to do it for RE on Wii and that's totally fine by me.

RE4 is a great game. I played it on my NGC and it's the only RE game I finished. I did not get that excited about RE5 though. I think part of it is because the main character changed from Leon to Chris. Who the hell is Chris? Well... I know he was the main character in one of the previous RE games but I never spent any time with him. However, I spent the whole RE4 adventure with Leon. I would be more interested in a RE game with a character that I'm faimiliar with which is why I'm kind of interested in The Darkside Chronicles.

@noname2200

Don't be too hard on Ubisoft or EA. At least Unisoft made specific Wii version of Shaun White and it turned out great. As for EA, Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger Woods 10 look like two great titles exclusive for Wii based on IGN's hand-on. At least they are trying.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I think Darkside Chronicles will be a fun game. If it is out for a budget price (max 30 Euro) I will buy it.

For the Real Survival-Horror I am looking for Cursed Mountain. This game seems to be new and fresh unlike the corny franchise Resident Evil has become. Yes Re5 is really bad.

Correction - they haven't done it THUS FAR.

Remember, RE5 has been in development for approx 4 years now. Kind of big scale. Capcom didnt admit to ignoring the Wii until last year. Who is to say that they won't start doing exactly what I suggested after RE5 is launched? It might take another year or 2, but I wouldn't say it will NEVER happen, at least not this early. Sure, that's an optomistic answer.

The pessimisitc answer - Art director. The art director/producer may feel the "cinematic" flair of RE5 is best not to be reduced in any form, and refuses to do such. Artists are moody people, its best not to piss them off. So the art director may have thrown a sh*t fit upon being asked to scale anything down for a Wii version.

Most of the Capcom forum people that are employees tend to be bored PR people, who are out of the loop until end term marketing and hype. They dont know anything about engine specs either.

I guess we'll see in time, albeit if it was really feasible to put these PS360 porjects on the Wii at all I'd be sure more companies would do it. Would it not be just as 'easy' for Square Enix to port FFXIII, or EA port Dead Space, or Capcom port Dead Rising (Rather then rebuild the whole game from scratch on the Wii with the RE4 engine).

Your hyperbole made the whole thing sound like it could easily have been done ready for launch. Personally I think it'd make more sense to put all 3 to launch together if there was any plan to do it - can share the same marketing budget.

Maybe if it's possible it'll become a trend for future developers? Seems like a short term investment to me though.

The difference in feasibility between SE and Capcom is that Capcom has an engine that works well on the Wii already (RE4). As stated, all you would have to do it get the art assets within size/memory limits for the Wii hardware. The engine is already proven to work well and look good. Wipe out the RE4 data, put in the redone RE5 data, and then you're done. Building an engine is the hardest part, making the game is comparitively easy.

Yeah, sorry if I was misleading, I didnt mean they'd have it ready for launch, not with how late in the pipeline they realized the Wii is a viable machine. Of course, as you said, it would make sense to have all 3 versions for launch, but if you were a CEO (thus, your main job was to MAKE money), would you say "we miscalculated the success of the Wii, oh well" or say "we miscalculated the success of the Wii. Expect to see RE5 on the Wii later down the road". With hundreds of thousands of people signing RE5 petitions for the Wii, its almost a guaranteed sale.  Just seems pigheaded to NOT do it.

Of course, Capcom is a dying developer as are most Japanese 3rd party devs. Western game developers are overtaking the market, and the Eastern ones are holding on to old traditions that no longer work in the changing industry.

Well the lead producer I think it was on Resident Evil 5 did express interest in creating a brand new entry into the Resident Evil franchise on Wii a few weeks ago. If that's the case then we may just see a Wii RE in the main series in 2011.

Until then we'll have RE4, RE:UC, RE:DC, RE0 and RE to tide us over.

What strike me about CM is how Nintendo aknowledge it ( it was listed in Nintendo financial report and in a recent Nintendo PR statement ).

Wonder if it is so because it is  surprisiling good or because it has a "mature" setting ( maybe both )

Can't you see whats happening? Why do you think Dead Space is on rails? Is EA risking millions of dollars on an untested product for the Wii? No

The very fact that there may be other companies copying Capcom IS THE PROBLEM.

I see what you're saying, but I really think that things aren't as bleak as they seem to you. Support on the system, even from ALL of the big publishers, is increasing, not decreasing. Granted that the big boys aren't going all out on the system (except for those times that they do), but again, so what? If Capcom etc. doesn't want your money, then give it to X-SEED/Sega/the many many MANY other companies that DO.

Third-parties don't owe us anything. Fortunately, we don't owe them jack-shit either.

Anyhow, I know you're not completely convinved yet, but I'm off to classes/work for about ten hours (*groan*). Care to continue this discussion at that time?

You rocked this thread, but I still won't buy Little King Story until your express regret for your wrongs toward Monster Hunter Tri.

I never understood the rationale of a "buy games to convince the company you want other games." Buy the games that you think look good because you want to play those games. Don't buy games simply on the hope that it will send a message to the publisher of what you want.
