Forums - Nintendo - Do Wii games look as good on 720 p screens as they do on sd tv's?

Not usually, and especially not on LCDs and plasma displays. The reason for this is not unique to the Wii; it happens with any content of a resolution lower than the screen's native one.

The reason for this is that unlike CRTs, LCDs and plasma screens cannot truly change their resolution. Instead, they fake it by upscaling the content to their native resolution. You can verify this yourself if you have an LCD or plasma monitor for your computer; just change your resolution to anything other than the highest one offered.

The problem is that the built-in upscaling hardware in most monitors sucks. I'm talking Cap'n Cheapo's Discount House-O-Silicon here; that's how badly it tends to be. This is, of course, to cut costs. One way around this is to use an external upscaler; one now exists for under $100, but for the most part they're hard to come by. If you can find one, though, it's the best way to get a decent-looking Wii game on an HD screen.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

I have a 26" 720 lcd RCA bought at Wal~Mart for my 360 in 2006.

A 3 year old low end LCD? Does anything look good on that TV?

Sometimes things do look a bit dark and I have to play with the tv's settings.  It doesn't have an actual brightness control but a black level thing.  I'll admit it doesn't look as good as some of those snazzy 1080's I've seen at Wal~Mart, but I think its functional.  And I really wouldn't know if it wasn't because it's not like I go gaming at other people's houses that have much better sets.

Heh, I have a 30" 720/1080i CRT HDTV. It is like 4 years old but games look great on it.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

No, it looks like crap on my 32 inch 720p.

Going with the component cables, and SETTING your Wii to EDTV..for some reason ALOT of people assume it changes to this setting automatically...You can notice the difference. I have a Sharp Aquos, and games look pretty good on there.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

Panasonic 42" 720p plasma here, and after setting 480p output via component I got, in comparison with my old SD tv via RGB:
pro
+ much more vibrant colors
+ no bleed-ins
+ finer details in textures
con
- more jaggies

All in all a definite improvement.

get the component cables and it'll look really good. I have a 46" 1080p Sony bravia and my wii looks great on it.

games always look better on smaller screens.... with a 26" I don't think you should worry.... now if you had a 50" there would be reasons to discuss this.
