Forums - Nintendo - Is Winning all that matters?

If you are a Wii fan, would you rather win this gen with many highly critically acclaimed games on your system as the NES, SNES, PS1, and PS2 had, or is just winning the gen and by a large margin all that really matters?

Many of the Wii's biggest hits, and these are games that have sold far more copies than games on any other consoles, have only received what could be called average review scores at best when they were first released.  Most Wii fans that I've spoken to on various forums say that these games have only received these types of scores because the majority of the reviewers in the videogame business are either biased against the Wii or don't understand the Wii.  Others say that these games will come to be regarded as some of the best ever released years from now.  However, I don't know if this is the complete story on that matter.  I remember back in the eighties following the videogame crash, when Nintendo's NES was first released and when games like Super Mario Brothers, Duck Hunt, Metroid, and Zelda came out that these games were much better than we remembered the games that we were playing before the crash as having been.  We thought those games blew away anything we had ever had on Atari.  And those NES games had it all.  Vastly improved graphics over the previous gen and deeper and more compelling gameplay than we had ever seen before.  Then the same thing happened in the following gens.  SNES gave us better rpgs and better versions of Zelda and Metroid.  The same thing occurred on PS1 and PS2 and on the handheld GBA and DS in their turn.  However, I am not sure if that is the case on Wii for the reasons I mentioned above.

So, I am wondering if Wii fans would rather win this gen with a console with many highly regarded games on it, unlike the situation now where more games on PS3 and 360 are regarded by critics to be the best, or if winning the gen no matter what the final reputation of their console of choice is all that matters to them.

I think the Wii's games can be just as good as those on any other consoles.  However, I agree with the critics that we haven't seen as many instances of that so far as on 360 and PS3.

Eh. Winning helps bring the awesome 3rd party support that we're finally getting, but otherwise the top Nintendo titles have been up to snuff, or have surpassed expectations (mostly in Mario Galaxy's case)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Not nearly as much as it would matter to PS360 beacuse Nintendo can survive just on their own games.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

win this gen with many highly critically acclaimed games

I'm a Wii fan, but I don't want the Wii to sell more so that I can rub it in other peoples faces. The better it sells the more attention it gets from game developers and therefore more games are developed, which allows opportunities for real gems to be created.

It's all about the games. It's always been about the games, and it will always be about the games. This generation of consoles is no different.

As for me, in my two years and some odd months of owning the Wii, I own more games (29 disc games plus 11 VC/WW games) than I've owned for any previous console (27 GCN games, 27 N64 games, and 18 Genesis games). And I'm definitely having a whole bunch of fun playing them, which is what matters in the first place.

So yeah, winning isn't everything, having fun with your console definitely is. And having fun doesn't rely much on whether your console is in 1st place or 3rd.

All about the games. I don't really care about the ratings or who ends up in 1st (although being on top usually means better 3rd party support). If a game is rated 60-70+ and it looks entertaining to me I may check it out. I have played a little over 4 days of CoD:WaW Wii online (probably around 20 hours offline) and spent plenty of time on AC:CF. I am pretty sure those games don't have the best scores (I don't know because I refuse to load metacritic ever). I mainly check out videos on gametrailers or other sites and see what they say but I don't take too much from the reviews unless they hint to horrible controls.

The same for me, except my Wii disc games hasn't caught up with my N64 games yet.... but that was a lot to do with my willingness to buy dirt cheap cartridges because I knew they would work fine. DVDs I am more sceptical so I buy fewer 2nd hand games.

And regards to whether sales matter to me, yes they do, but it is a wholly seperate thing to my like of gaming..... I come to this site because I like analysing numbers and watching trends, it's just a bonus that it is also about video games.

I want Nintendo to win because Sony and Microsoft seems to be doing all they can to kill gaming all together. I don't care for one seconds about how games are reviewed, I don't need another persons opinion to make up my own, but some of the highly rated games on the HD consoles this gen are in reality nothing but regression where the same idea is rehashed over and over while fewer and fewer people can be bothered.

If Sony and Microsoft and 'the hardcore' had their way, video gaming would be a dying industry for the special interest crowd that think a game is an interactive movie. Fact is, 'real gamers' love games, and games are a much much wider genre than the FPS circle jerkers think. Nintendo understand what a game is, and thankfully they have stepped in to rescue video gaming for all of us again. I hope Nintendo demolishes all competition this gen and that either Microsoft or Sony are forced out of the console market as a result.

I could not care any less what the ciritcs think. Quite honestly their scoring systemm has proved to be a good indicator of jack shit so why should I listen to them? Who wins a generation is of little concern to me as well. I care about having games I enjoy. Currently the Wii has far more games that are good in my eyes than the other two consoles combined.
